Goodnight room
Goodnight moon
Brian’s changed a lot this winter…
His “Titanic” story was solid, though, the one where he gallantly gave up the last seat in a lifeboat and only survived when a couple of the deck chairs he was rearranging slid out of formation and knocked him overboard right into the very same lifeboat.
“…Williams arrived in Berlin the day after the wall fell.” For G*d’s sake, the Wall didn’t “fall” on either 9/9 or the day after. It was still there and people still had to show their i.d.'s to get from one side to the other till the following spring. That said, the wall opening up was a multi-day event of extraordinary euphoria which started on that Thursday evening and ran through the weekend. So if he arrived during those first few days, he might rightly be said to have come when the Wall came down.
So, without a scintilla of evidence, your first instinct is to not only believe an unsupported allegation/hearsay from an anonymous source, but to actually ascribe a credible identity to them?
Careful or you’ll find yourself gravitating towards Faux before you know it. That’s just the kind of credulity off which they thrive.
Agree. It wasn’t a “blink your eyes and it’s over” kind of event, and there were most likely crowds of people coming and going, celebrating, collecting souvenirs, taking pictures, and so on, for many days.
Undoubtedly Williams has lied, and has shown a penchant for exaggeration, but now it seems like the sharks are circling, snapping at anything, even the most tenuous of rumors.
I didn’t say I necessarily believed it, nor did I ascribe some definitive identity to the source of the information as if I somehow knew. It just strikes me that the source could have been Tom Brokaw - because he was actually there. I am not a reporter reporting a news story. I am just some commentor on the internet, free to speculate to my heart’s content about where an unattributed quote might have come from.
And I also have no interest in Fox News, so take a hike with that stuff.
If they can fake a moon landing, then the Berlin Wall is child’s play.
NBC’s Stephen Glass.
NBC story I recall seeing on Brokaw being at the Wall when it - metaphorically - fell: http://www.msnbc.com/msnbc/watch/tom-brokaw-recalls-covering-berlin-wall-fall-355282499536
I don’t understand all of the criticism. His core principle and chief talent has always been to have great looking hair. He has not backed down an inch on that. All else is trivial.
I suspect NBC executives and others in his circle (Brokaw for sure) know that Williams is a serial liar, but in the entitled world, you make your own rules. And in 10 or 15 years time, he’ll just misremember this whole event. In his retelling, the rest of us will have dreamed the whole thing.
Stephen Glass was not suspended without pay, as is the case with Williams. Glass was fired and his career as a journalist was over once it was discovered that he had fabricated many of the articles published in The New Republic- stories that had not been fact-checked. The fabricated stories were discovered in 1998.
Now, 16 years later, Glass has become a lawyer, But because of his youthful indiscretions, the state of California, where he presently resides, will not admit him to the Bar on the grounds of bad character.
Both men violated the trust of their employers in order to entertain the public. Neither made false reports on non-existent weapons of mass destruction a la Judith Miller. But a major difference-.Williams will land on his feet- might be a good choice to replace Matt Lauer as anchor The Today Show. Glass’s life has been ruined.
Well, there’s Malcolm McDowell fan. Or is it a Stanley Kubrick fan? Anthony Burgess?
Why was this guy always one day/one helicopter behind the real event? It’s like he sat listening at the police scanner waiting for others to report a story and then became an ambulance chaser. He’s his own worst case story. You can almost see his body floating by the next time it rains. Enough with feeling sorry for him. He needs to resign.
He’s been lying for years, it appears that it was common knowledge, but all of the sudden its a big deal? Our elite media is a friggin joke, a bad bad joke.
Lol. Wrongway Gump.
My how the media loves to beat a story to death. They do it all the time. It really gets tiresome. Why don’t they wait until all the facts are out and then report on it?
Further, FOX lies ALL the time. They don’t misremember, they outright lie!
I still have my suspicion there is someone out there with a vendetta against Williams and right now they are enjoying this to the hilt.
Burgess would adore the modern multi-platform newslebrity…
Real television journalism died when the wall between network news and entertainment divisions was officially dissolved. Williams is well-aware of his status as a pretend-journalist, and seeks to compensate by embellishing the role with stories that might have been real, had they been told in another era.
