One of the advantages of reading TPM is you can understand an article like this one. The conventional wisdom is that Russia is a powerhouse to be feared. It’s why Putin spews. But it’s not true. Josh Marshall did a discussion on this awhile back and Obama has come right out and said it. Russia is a regional ( at best ) power that’s going to have serious problems in the future. It is one of the most unliked countries in the world and it’s economy is stone age stuff. You really have to go there. The place is fucking depressing. Shitty food and shitty places to live. Shitty weather and way to much reliance on booze.

Putin is in no place to do shit. That’s why he didn’t.

“Although we have the right to retaliate, we will not resort to irresponsible ‘kitchen’ diplomacy but will plan our further steps to restore Russian-US relations based on the policies of the Trump Administration,”

Putin: We spy on US diplomats. Why would we mess with the info that we get so easily? Besides, My Useful Idiot is around the corner.

When Medvedev was president and Putin prime-minister (2008 - 2012 ) one of the jokes in Russia was:

Putin and Medvedev ordering in a restaurant:
Putin " I would like the steak and - let me see - maybe the cabbage ?"
Waiter: " What about the turnip ?"
Putin " He has the same as me"

There you have it, Mitch and Paul. Vladimir Putin is openly gloating about the influence he’ll soon have over the U.S. government. That’s the patriotism of the GOP at work. That’s the newfound respect for our country Trump would create. And you dare to say Obama was weak. The shame/rage/disgust hits just keep coming.

Off topic, except for Putin leadership model.

Let the sycophancy and systemic corruption…begin!

A growing list of companies — including Dow Chemical, Carrier and IBM — have sought to give Trump the credit he seeks for job or investment announcements, hoping their concessions can win them seats at the table as Trump begins crafting policies in health care, education, financial services and technology.

“I suspect if companies can make announcements that are positive for American jobs, then of course they will, because every company wants to be on the good side” of Trump, said Steve Odland, leader of the Committee for Economic Development and the former CEO of Office Depot and Autozone.

I made a brief visit to Russia in between other destinations, St. Petersburg, to be exact. I have been a lot of places, but the vibe there was uniquely oppressive. I remember feeling in danger just walking from the museum to the hotel. I swear to God, we were followed. Whether it was thieves ( a LOT of that) or “eyes”, I don’t know. But I could not wait to get the hell out of there. They also confiscated my crochet hooks at the airport. And that is unforgivable.

“Putin called the Obama administration’s actions “provocative and aimed at further weakening the Russia-US relationship” and “damaging to international relations as a whole,” and described the response as a “regrettable” end to its term.”

Right, because hacking to interfere in our elections processes was none of those things. Putin just took a page right out of the GOP/Teatroll playbook.

Edit: And you know, it just goes to show how much the loss of a “loyal opposition” is undermining our country’s ability to defend itself. When one party has become so utterly mired in mindless, knee-jerk partisanship and opposition to the sitting POTUS that they are easily co-opted by corporate or foreign entities who have no other interest but doing the same in order to cause damage to our government’s and nation’s ability to function, it’s a real fucking national security issue. The GOP/Teatrolls’ attitude that the enemy of their enemy is their friend is so insanely backwards as to bring their mental health into question. Not only is the nihilistic, self-interested, myopic premise of viewing the Dems/liberals as their “enemy” completely wrong-headed, but their apparent view of Russia as their “friend” based on that premise cosmically buggers all concept of rational thought right in the ass. Russia and Putin are not our friends. Not in any way, shape or form.

He’s doing a favor for his boy, Drumpf.

Unfortunately for Putin and his foil, they will discover that Americans are not like the people of North Korea, who blithely accept (at least outwardly) all that their leaders tell them. There will be real resistance–across the political spectrum–to these clumsy attempts to re-write history.

St. Pete is a unique part of Russia. It’s much better off than Moscow. Russia keeps it that way.
