Discussion: Pruitt: 'If We Really Care About Clean Air' We Should Export More American Coal

Psst…Scott. There’s a new invention called the sun and the wind. And I have a gumption the rest of the world is aware, even though you’re apparently not.

Ha, Ha, Ha!

It’s a joke, right. “Clean Coal” is a still a thing?

OH, he was serious.

Well shit, it’s OK. We can just build a wall to keep the emissions from other countries creeping back over the US.

And, make Indonesia pay for it.

Solved - Moving on!

I was fortunate to visit England as a teenager. Went back to Cambridge recently, and spotted this sign marking national bicycle path #11.

Next, he will prove with “geometric logic” that the mess boys stole the strawberries. What an incredible, crooked idiot.

Pruitt should stay in that soundproof thing we bought him.

“Pruitt: ‘If We Really Care About Clean Air’ We Should Export More American Coal.”

If we really cared about clean air, we’d export Pruitt.

Idiot, yep in many ways, but not this sort of thing. His agenda has zero to do with clean air and all about revenue flow to the right pockets. The Trump era is typified by one of two decisions. It is clear at any given step.

1.Does it keep the Dog whistles going to hold the base.
2. Most importantly, how much money can be made until the jig is up.

There are no other points of decision making from the top down. We are being fleeced.

Pruitt and his Republican pals aren’t just the party of Jim Crow redux, they are the party of dig-drill-and-burn.

A 4 C mean temperature swing in two centuries – and 4 C is now the low end, the “if everything goes well” estimate – has no known prior example in the geologic record. The official Republican position on this leap into a largely unknown world that minimally suggests accelerating mass extinction and the human depopulation of tropical nations is, “burn more! faster!”.

We might be able to reverse Jim Crow (again) but we cannot reverse the consequences of 4 C plus. For Justice, for Democracy, for Survival, the Republican barn burners must be stopped.

Well, his idea is (ostensibly) that the countries still burning coal will burn low-sulfur instead of high-sulfur coal. Which would be good as far as it goes. But they do it because it’s really cheap on a cash-flow basis. So we’re going to subsidize those countries’ coal consumption to get them to buy US product? We’re going to start trade wars with them to force them to buy our coal? We’re going to sanction the countries they currently buy coal from, to get them to stop selling? Every possible way to do this is more complicated and expensive than just not using coal any more.

and aside from burning the stuff - please remember that the mining and transportation of coal is not a tidy or clean extraction process. It is my contention that all mine owners and refinery owners should live within 50 miles downstream of their operations, in a mansion if they wish, with all their toys. And if they still don’t want environmental regs, then OK.

Straight-line distance from Laramie to Jakarta: 9300 miles

Straight-line distance from Australia’s two major coal-exporting cities to Jakarta: 3000 and 3400 miles.

US coal exports to Asia doubled in 2017, largely because Australia’s exports were disrupted by a major cyclone. US exports are dropping back off in 2018.

I don’t know why today’s political stories make me feel particularly hopeless about America’s future, but they do. Pruitt, the pardoning of D’Souza, impending trade wars, the issues of kids being taken from parents (and being separated from siblings at the same time), a Florida jury just awarded 4 cents to the family for the life of a black man questionably shot by police - I can’t see how even a focused, Democratic administration can right the ship or restore much of our credibility after the Trump disaster.
