All you said, plus shootings on this scale could not happen without access to military style assault firearms. Unfortunately, not “impossible”, only the most recent and deadliest of a series of mass shootings, and we do nothing.

Yet again, another mass murder brought to you by over-the-counter assault weapons that can easily be modified to fully automatic.
Once again, there is no reason for a civilian to easily obtain an assault weapon, AR-15, or other.
It is not used for hunting.
I live in the semi-rural county, and know the people who shoot their semi- and fully-automatic weapons. These are not good neighbors. These are people who answer the door with a loaded pistol hidden behind a pillow.
Nobody hunts with an AR-15. In fact, you would be vilified for bringing an AR-15 on a hunt.
From my experience, only crazy people worship and own assault weapons, and they should be outlawed.
There should be an exemption for collectors, and a limited exemption for registered gun owners who take locked containers to a gun ranges to blow off steam (like old-style machine guns), but basically they should be outlawed, and certainly not readily available to the public.
Will America finally wise up? I doubt it.

Ken Burns’ take down of Hair Furor’ Trump was just epic. It came from the normally mild mannered Burns, who prefaced it by saying he always tried to stay away from commenting on national political figures to avoid partisanship which, he felt, lessened his works. BUT…he said, he could stay silent no longer about Donald Trump, and in his commencement speech at Stanford today, he WAS silent no longer.:

“There comes a time when I and you can no longer remain neutral, silent — we must speak up and speak out,” said Burns, who is known for historical documentaries. “For 216 years, our elections — though bitterly contested — have featured the philosophies and characters of candidates who were clearly qualified.”“That is not the case this year,” he said, to a round of applause.
“He is an insult to our history,” Burns said. A moment later, he implored: “Do not be deceived by his momentary good behavior. It is only a spoiled, misbehaving child hoping somehow to still have dessert.”
Burns described the candidate as one who “is against lots of things but doesn’t seem to be for anything,” offers “bombastic and contradictory promises,” is a “terrifying Orwellian statesman,” “insults veterans, threatens a free press, mocks the handicapped, denigrates women, immigrants and Muslims.”Burns reminded the audience that Trump avoided several chances to disavow David Duke, an advocate for white supremacy and former Ku Klux Klan leader.Trump is “a person who easily lies,” he continued; “who creates an environment where the truth doesn’t seem to matter, who has never demonstrated any interest in anyone or anything but himself and his own enrichment.” He is “an infantile, bullying man, who depending on his mood is willing to discard old and established alliances, treaties and long-standing relationships,” Burns said. His candidacy “is a political Ponzi scheme.”

I have been remembering today the terrorist attacks on Spain on 3-11-04. They occurred shortly before their general election where the incumbent Center-Conservative PM (Aznar) was stepping down after two terms, during which Spain essentially made the quickest steps since WW2 in rejoining the rest of Europe and USA in terms of modernity of economy. Not saying it was all good, lots of privatizations resulting in utility heads becoming millionaires with the stock options. Lots of subsequent joblessness.The total concentration of Spanish Banking from a healthy number of banks to about two Mega banks (Santander and BBV). However at the time, the presumption would have been that the Popular Party would win again after relative prosperity and stability. The 3-11 attacks and PM Aznar’s haste to blame Basque terrorists before it was found to be Jihadists damaged his party’s election prospects and they were voted out for the Center -Left PSE. I have often wondered about terrorists or others attempting to panic and buffalo herd the US electorate. I know it is probably paranoid.
