Discussion: Pope Seeks An End To All Kinds Of Torture

Discussion for article #224190

This pope is not just Catholic, heā€™s a Christian. And let me say this to our friendly neighborhood trollsā€”thinking torture is ever justified is one of the most vile and loathsome positions you can take in your moral life. And it is always counterproductive. God damn Bush and Cheney to hell for staining our nation with it, and if you think otherwise then God damn you.

Oh, but what if thereā€™s a ticking time bomb in an orphanage run by saints, and you have only minutes to find out where it is, and blah, blah, blah, blahā€¦

Youā€™re being facetious, of course, but that actually happened one time. There was this plot going on and they told the president just over a month before it happened. If heā€™d taken it seriously and asked for coordinated conventional intelligence work he might have stopped it. He could at least have tried. But he said ā€œAll right, youā€™ve covered your ass, now,ā€ because he was basically a snotty obnoxious rich boy. Then the fucking bastard took the rest of the day off and went fishing. They did the torturing after the bomb had already gone off. True story. Funny thing is a lot of people thought this guy should be president because of his oft-professed Christianity. Anyway, donā€™t get me started. I donā€™t have much patience or humor about torture. Pet peeve, you might say.

Perhaps he should shorten the Mass . . . . .

If Frank is really serious about ending torture, I have a list of reality shows that need to GO.

He also is giving the stiff-arm to the mafia, as well as cleaning up the Vatican the bank on which the mob has long relied for money laundering.

Heā€™s a bit twisted up re: alcohol v weed, but that is a generational issue. He has yet to understand the medical angle, and that weā€™re not going to wait for prayer to work on that.

If anything will put Faux Xtians over the edge itā€™s slamming their beloved torture.

Well stated. Besides not being able to justify torture morally (and I agree with you that it is never justified), it isnā€™t an efficient way to get good information. Thatā€™s what is mind boggling to me when the right argues in favor of using torture.

Even if it trivializes a discussion about torture, that is really funny (and those of us who have sat through some endless sermons know what you mean)

And God-damn the 'cons Jack Bauer worship-ITā€™S A FRIGGIN TV SHOW!!

The neocons are all just like Ronald Raygun, in that they believe in highly dramatic and jingoistic patriotic memes, and made fiction their reality.

Has the Church ever apologized or atoned for the Inquisition?

Dick Cheney just accused the pope of being ā€˜soft on terrorā€™.

Myself.

And how nice to see Pope Francis (gotta love the name) putting his mouth where his ā€œmoneyā€ (having risked his life for his beliefs) already was. Again.

Well, nobody expects the Spanish Inquisition.

All fine and good, but he didnā€™t condemn enhanced interrogation techniques, now did he?

What about pedophiles still frocked, still sheltering in place?

Does that include cancelling ā€œThe Voiceā€ and ā€œCall of the Wildmanā€?

The Pope says, Iā€™m not singling out anyone in the Bush administration but that old crank with the initials Dick Cheney is really pissing me off. In fact, Iā€™ve got a little water dunking game that I like to play called, baptize the waterboarders until we get true confessions because thatā€™s how the Pope rolls.
