Discussion for article #243769
GOP voters are afraid of everything.
Ok. So we’re back to immigration and xenophobia again. I was beginning to worry when Cruz perked up in the polls.
It is tragically sad to see how Trump and the other Repugs have been so successful at tapping into the vein of fear and hatred among so many of our fellow countrymen. God help us all if Hillary and/or Bernie, Democrats, progressives and the rest of us are unable to effectively combat this herd of lemmings racing to run off the cliff of xenophobia and bigotry.
Bin Laden’s grand plan is coming along nicely: Republican voters were always his greatest strategic asset.
I’m still very excited to see Trump excel. It does not mean that he is creating more bigoted, uninformed voters. He is merely a lens, providing the opportunity for us to see them now that Trump has inspired them to surrender whatever shame they used to feel. The scum is rising to the top. But it DOES mean that we are another day closer to the possibility, however remote, that Trump might actually be the candidate. In which case, the Senate GOP majority probably goes away, the House comes into play despite all the gerrymandering and the SCOTUS conservative majority likely turns.
Those things would all signify a change. That we live in a country with a dangerously large percentage of racists, anti-Constitutionalists and traitors to the Union signifies no change at all; that’s just status quo. I’m hopeful that status quo will finally start to degrade soon. But for now, that fringe is there and has been since I’ve been in diapers.
As horrible as it is for victims of it, I prefer xenophobia, bigotry, and racism to be in full view than in the shadows – much easier for compassionate human beings (both progressive and conservative) to confront both the causes and symptoms of it. The fights for equality, tolerance, and human rights are far from finished, but enemies often get loud and nasty when their backs are truly up against the wall.
This is so beautiful.
My fear two years ago was Cruz as a New American Hitler that the GOP morons would buy. Based on that I solidified and accelerated my plans to return to Europe and live for the rest of my days/ Trump, Cruz, it makes no difference to me who the leader is on its face, its the idea that so many folks think this way that is scary. I still believe now as I always have after intense study of the holocaust, ethnic conflict in the Balkans, the Irish diaspora etc etc. Yes, the holocaust could happen here and in much the same way, a semi secret pogrom carried out with a wink and nod.
Sensational Headline is SENSATIONAL!!
TPTMZ.
The champion of a proud and overtly racist electorate and a party so used to a “win at all costs” mentality that they are paralyzed to oppose what they’ve created.
I long for the day when the short-fingered vulgarian rockets to new heights on a pole.
Perhaps. But the fact that Trump validates their xenophobic/racist/misogynist/fascist inclinations is in itself dangerous, as the growing social acceptability of those inclinations leads not only to nut-jobs torching mosques, or harassing Muslim kids in school, etc., but allows and even encourages politicians to take ever more extreme stands about immigration, defense spending, domestic surveillance, education, taxes, etc… Or, to put it more plainly: what if the crypt fascists expose themselves, but not enough people care to call them out?
Another day closer to that Muslim ban opposed by people in both parties being opposed by people in only one.
The chicken comes home to roost. The field for them towards the top really is the nuttiest group ever. Maybe Rubio would fair reasonably well in a general election based on perception, not really reality, but it is easy to seem somewhat sane when the other guys are chomping at the bit looney.
Say what you will about Trump, but if he were president he’d get things done.
.
Horrible, evil, racist things.
…intended consequence. Not sure the creators of this fear-phenomenon are prepared for the Trumpster they created.
