Discussion for article #222654
46-45 against Grimes. An incumbent with less than 50%. She can take him.
Republicans like to talk about “throw the bums out”, and “the 47%”, and “congressional pork”.
But at the end of the day, what they really mean is “throw the bums out – except mine”, “he got us congressional pork we deserve”, and “gimme free stuff instead of giving the ghetto dwellers free stuff”.
By the time he gets to election day, Mitch will BE the Tea Party candidate, and we can take this “crushed tea” meme right to the polls.
Damn, this shocks the shit out of me. From the signage alone, it really looked to me like Bevin had picked up a lot of support in Republican districts. I’m very surprised McConnell is doing so well.
Absolutely. I honestly don’t think that the Turtle will make it. and that’s not just me whistling past the graveyard. I really don’t get the sense that the 25% who are supporting Bevin are necessarily going to come home to the Turtle. I think that his “soft” support among KY GOP voters in addition to Grimes turning out the Dem base can put her over the top.
what, Plucky, you can’t believe your own lyin’ eyes?
Seriously, if YOU think there’s something amiss in the numbers here, with your perspective, imagine how the Tea Mob around you feels.
Near as I can tell, nobody gives a shit about Cochran(RINO!!!) vs McDaniel (WHITEPOWER!!!) in Mississippi.
Locally, judging from the signage I see, I think old Thad is in trouble.
Landrieu,Hagan,Pryor and Nunn are polling well too. A Southern sweep would be sweet. Imagine the despair within the GOP.
Just drove through Kentucky. BEVEN signs everywhere. No turtle signs. So the tea partiers are really good at putting up signs.
Signs don’t vote.
Only if Democrats get out and vote. Grimes has always been neck and neck with McConnell. KY has a strong Democratic Party (as shown by most state-wide offices – Governor, AG, Secy of State, etc), but they just don’t send Democrats to Washington. This is the year to change that.
OK, so I’m pushing for a litmus test to see which Congressional candidates would support descheduling pot if they get elected to the 114th Congress.
Of course that would start in the House, but would also have to go through the Senate on its way to the President, so this might be a great opportunity for Grimes to use that issue as her tipping point, get Mitch to talk about it in a debate, she should then go all in, “for the sake of our fellow Kentuckians” and in support of “states rights” to make their own pot choices so she would support descheduling on a federal level (and Kentucky, of course, is one of the biggest pot producing states in the union).
Mitch has already taken the full-on hypocrite’s approach to pot, supporting hemp cultivating but claiming “marijuana kills” in the same breath and speech. Grimes can use his own words against him, and rightly so.
Every time he waffles about it in one of theri debates, she can gesture to the crowd and ask him “Do you REALLY think these Kentuckians should go to prison just for smoking pot?”
Again, I know I am promoting this issue as a Congressional litmus test elsewhere in these threads, and over on Prime, but this is really worth considering as a Senate issue to be co-opted by our progressive candidates.
Grimes can take the fulcrum right out from under Mitch and own it with this issue.
After reading Plucky’s comment downthread, and what you posted, it makes one wanna go “hmmmmm???”
I’d rather see a litmus test that any tax cuts need to be offset by defense spending reductions.
It will be interesting to see of the vindictive nature of the tea party groups materializes in KY if Bevin loses. It appears to me that they tend to operate like sociopathic jilted lovers and essentially say If we can’t have our guy, than no one (from our side) gets it.
And that’s kinda what I’m sensing. Look, I don’t live in KY and I could be VERY wrong about this. But I also think this ties into the whole “yard sign” issue. People who own a home and are jazzed up enough about their candidate to put a sign on their front lawn really believe in that person. If Bevin has got his people to that level of determination, I don’t necessarily see all these people reluctantly voting for the Turtle. Some, maybe. Not all.
About 1 month ago I thought here on TPM people were certain McConnell was completely done, ready to pack up and go home. I guess he proved someone completely wrong.
This is EXACTLY what I’m seeing. There are Bevin signs in yards, on corners, big signs on farmland, etc. The only McConnell signs I’ve seen were in upscale neighborhoods in Louisville.
I’ve never seen a single post where anyone said they thought McConnell was sure to lose to Bevin.
Edited to add: Oh, I see Libs is Hugh. Makes sense. He keeps claiming various TPMers were certain McConnell would lose despite the fact that no one has ever said that.
