Discussion: Poll: Large Majority Wants Congress To Fix Possible Obamacare Subsidies Gap

there’s that number again! 27%!!!

I’m betting that it will be even worse than that. They’ll load up any fix with so many poison pills, from a balanced budget rule to an abortion ban, that democrats will filibuster it. And then they can run on “we’re trying to fix Obamacare but democrats won’t let us.”

While I like your optimism, you assume that the American electorate, upon discovering the consequences of the Supreme Court gutting the subsidies, won’t just blame Obama and Democrats for making this mistake in writing the law. Whether it was a typo they missed or a naive assumption that everyone would accept the intent and/or that more states would create their own marketplaces, voters could think, with some justification admittedly, that Democrats are responsible for the resulting mess.

The poll shows that 27% would rather have the health care system crash and take the economy with it. That’s more than half of all Republican voters. So, if you’re an R in Congress, this poll supports the crash and burn position.

“Haven’t thought about what they’ll do…” ??

They will do nothing. We know this, whaddya mean they don’t know? We (those of us who are familiar with the republican run congress) know damn well what they will do. Nothing. These are not normal citizens.

The gerrymandering makes these cretins safe so they can do virtually anything as long as it’s not perceived as working with the black president. As long as they remain as 2 year old tantrum throwers, and keep screaming about sochalism and Ben-Gazzy they have no worries about reelection.

What will they do about the subsidies? At most a tax cut of some kind. And that’s highly unlikely too. I think they’ll simply do nothing at all.

And since the poor and working poor do not vote like the elderly do, they won’t pay a bit for it either.

They won’t get any democrats on board for significant changes and I don’t think they can get to a majority for a bill that allows the ACA to exist going forward. There are probably 30-40 GOP districts where a vote to fix the ACA is a guarantee of losing your seat in the 2016 primary.

The most likely scenario is that they do nothing for several months while they try and fail to either come up with a plan of their own or to vote on any fixes while following the rule of having to get to majority with only GOP votes. By late fall people, including republicans, will be so disgusted with them that they’ll finally put up a straight fix with maybe 1 other revision (medical devices tax) and pass it with democratic help. The Tea Party will howl, but they’ll be ignored.
