Discussion: Poll: Iowa Republicans Like Ben Carson's Comments On Hitler

Out of context. First off, the total deaths of the two A-bombs was not 350,000. The total CASUALTIES was between 129,000 & 246,000. There were between 19 and 28 MILLION civilian casualties during ww2. Those two A-bombs reduced the number of civilian deaths because it brought about an end to the war without the invasion of the Japanese mainland. Allied casualty estimates for the campaign varied widely, but were 500,000 Allied casualties on the low end.

All major powers during ww2 executed campaigns against their opponents whose focus was to inflict civilian casualties. The two night bombing of Tokyo in March 45 caused 100,000 casualties, more than the Nagasaki A-bomb. It was a different time, and thankfully we now consider this type of warfare criminal.

But what do they think of Muslim Obamacare recipients with guns? Well? Can we get a snap poll on that?

Iā€™m waiting.

What the hell is taking so long? Geez, youā€™d think Iowa was some back water place thatā€™s had their IQ ruined by Monsanto.

Oh goddess, did I just channel Trump?

Sorry, but thatā€™s not the same. America had been at war with Japan for almost 4 years and had suffered over 100,000 deaths and 300,000 casualties just in the Pacific theatre. Historians estimate 5.5 million civilian deaths in the Pacific due to Japanese democide plus 500,000 POWā€™s who died while in Japanese custody. Further, military planners estimated well over 1 million casualties (both American, Allied forces and Japanese) if Operation Downfall were executed. Put into historical context, I can see how Americans in 1945 would overwhelmingly approve of the use of atomic weapons to end WW2.

This is at best a disputed fact.
The rest you are correct about. Curtis LeMayā€™s fire-bombing of Japanese cities killed more people than the atomic bombs did, I donā€™t think a lot of people know that anymore.

Letā€™s be honest:
If youā€™re Hillary Clinton, youā€™re just delighted to see that
Carson & Trump are the two leading Republican candidates in Iowaā€¦

Yes, weā€™ve downscaled to this:

So the take home message is Iowa republicans admire stupidity.
Wow

Of course, a lot of these Iowa farmers are heavily subsidized by the government. Just try to get rid of Ethanol subsidies. Hypocrites much?

Whatā€™s the source of this picture? Thereā€™s got to be a story here.

Let me add to this that President Truman, if he had not used this weapon out of concern for Japanese deaths would have been impeached and removed from office in no time flat. You donā€™t develop a new weapon for billions of dollars (in 1940s dollars) in a World War and then decide not to use it. How on earth would Truman have defended himself against the accusations of American parents whose sons would have been killed in September of 1945, or in October, or whenever, instead of ending the war in August? Even after Hiroshima the Japanese Imperial War Council voted strongly against capitulation!

Lets remember folks that the population of Iowa is 3.2 million and we are talking about 50% of that and a further smaller percentage that constitute Republican Primary voters maybe 20%.

Olā€™ Batshit Crazy BenĀ®ā„¢ ainā€™t winning no national election with that number. More people vote for dogcatcher in NY

Donā€™t enter a hall of mirrors.

There are some very naive and pathetic voters in Iowa, almost all happen to be Republican and Evangelical Religious Fanatics who views of Christianity is more of that of a Hate Group and Cult following. Rural voters are so brainwashed into voting Republican all their lives, that even if it was against their best interest not to vote GOP, they still do. If any of them had the common sense to realize that by electing a Republican, they are badly hurting their future livelihood and well being because of Republicans wanting to eliminate both Social Security and Medicare as we know it today.

Agree. Not the same. The people who deliberated on whether to drop these bombs, with this type of destruction, were weighing that cost against the loss of life that they anticipated would be required for an invasion of the Japanese homeland, given what we had already seen from them in their scorched-earth resistance to being pushed back across the Pacific. They were weighing how much more war the US citizens could tolerate, as we headed into 4 years of total war and everything else held in abeyance.

They liked Rick Santorum and Mike Huckabee too.

Itā€™s possible theyā€™re not paying attention to what heā€™s saying, or tuning it out. Heā€™s 1, an outsider and they HATE insiders this year, 2, a brain surgeon, so heā€™s got to be smart, 3, a devout Xian, and HEY so am I!, and 4, black - see there are good blacks, and Iā€™m not a racist!

Iowa Republicans have, in other years been enamored with Pat Robertson, Pat Buchanan, Mike Huckabee and Rick Frothy. So thereā€™s precedent.

Not that thereā€™s anything wrong with that.
