Discussion: Poll: Grimes Holds Slim Lead Over McConnell

Discussion for article #223858

Another Dem from a coal state who will caucus with the Republicans on environmental issues. Not helpful.

First Cantor now Mitch. Clearly Republicans are #winning.

Oh please oh please oh please oh please.

I don’t even care what her positions are. Just beat McConnell.

This is a Republican pollster by the way so maybe the beltway hacks like Stu Rothenberg can start paying attention and stop acting like McConnell has this locked up.

Oh, come on. No Democrat will ever be elected from a coal state by supporting CO2 emission standards. Never, ever, ever. It doesn’t matter that coal provides only a tiny percentage of jobs in coal states due to mechanization and strip mining. It doesn’t matter that coal provides a declining share of the state’s tax revenue. It doesn’t matter that coal use is receding because natural gas is now cheaper per btu. It will be a full freaking generation before any of that makes any difference to coal state voters. That’s just how it is.

So your choice is a Democrat who keeps the Senate in Democratic control or a Republican who will vote the wrong way on everything and throws it to Republican control.

The up side is that being against CO2 and further stack emission regulations doesn’t mean you’re automatically against things like higher milage standards, clean water rules, hazardous substance control, or endangered species regulations. A thing that does make you against all of those things is being a Republican.

If Grimes takes down Bitch McConnell, that will easily beat when Murphy took down Allen West, which is currently my high water mark.

The election is a referendum on McConnell so if you are undecided at this point, something is wrong. I would count those for Grimes.

I’ll cut her about 10 million miles of slack on this one. In this one regard—coal—OK, nothing changes for one seat. That’s in return for huge, huge benefits, including but not limited to the door being shown to a guy who’s used Congressional rules gleefully to frustrate the will of the people. And helping keep the Senate in Democratic control, because we do not want the inmates running the asylum. NO DEFAULTS PLEZ

Wow, who said I think she should lose because of it? I would like to see a smart person from a coal state talking about how to transition jobs away from coal, because coal is not our future, it’s our past. It’s about jobs, not coal. If you gave these workers a healthier way to make a living, do you think they would object? Her response is so kneejerk.

Manchin is an example of someone who goes the wrong way on so many issues because he is beholden to the coal interests. I don’t see the coal companies as being any different from the Wall Streeters. As long as we keep stroking them, they will continue to exert too much control.

I would love to see McConnell lose.

Um, duh?
Last time I checked, Mitch McConnell was Senate Minority Leader…

If you would, then don’t ask Grimes to tell the voters in Kentucky about how it’s time to transition jobs away from coal. That may well be a rational argument, but it’s not one many people are emotionally ready to think about. She’d very likely terrify and enrage every working person in the state, and the Republicans would beat that drum until midnight on Election Day. You’d literally never hear the end of it. Let someone else make that argument, not a person running for statewide office. It’d be suicide.

Mitch is an angsty turtle! Just don’t take your Xanax with Boner’s “water bottle,” Mitch…

Jesus F Christ. I actually think you can talk “green” and the economy at the same time.

So she’s leading BEFORE an enraged Elizabeth Warren shows up to help. Sweet.

Time for Elizabeth Warren to get down to Kentucky and start hammering McConnell for the filibuster on Student Loans et al.

Want to see McConnell go down like Cantor.

I live in KY. You could make all the high-minded, intelligent arguments one could muster about the future of coal and KY jobs, and all these people are going to hear is, “Grimes is against coal, Grimes is against KY”. It’s that simple. One of the most popular license plates is KY is the “Friends of Coal” plate. It’s just behind the UK and UofL plates. Considering how much we KYians love our basketball, that should tell you something.

Coal’s dead regardless of whether Grimes shills for it. Natural gas is killing it. Market forces, ironically, eh Mitch?

There’s a question of time and place, and likely effectiveness. As I said once in a post you liked, life is complicated. And read what Plucky says above, she lives there. I’ll leave it at that.

It’s absolutely political suicide in an uneducated, very poor, coal state like KY to try to argue that there is anything even remotely wrong with coal. No one is going to hear the message about better, safer jobs. Nope, all they’ll hear is that she’s against coal which means she’s against KY.

Plus, McConnell is going to have enough money with which to attack her. The last thing she needs is the coal lobby throwing tons of money behind her opponent. Right now, not having seen her donor list, I’m guessing they’re hedging their bets. They were behind her in her bid for Sec. of State, so I’m hoping they sit out or remain neutral this time around.
