Discussion: Poll: Alison Lundergan Grimes Trails Mitch McConnell By 1 Point

Here we go donkeys, here we go.
CLAP - CLAP!

A McConnell defeat would be so very sweet, but I don’t give Grimes much credit for raw intellect. Shame that Ashley Judd balked at running, as it would have been interesting to see how strong the celebrity effect would have been…

It’s all about TURNOUT!!

Mitch McConnell is what is wrong with Washington. Go Grimes!

Sam Wang, Princeton Election Consortium, who may or may not be the most accurate election predictor says Turtle is up by 4 points and the final Senate count will be GOOP 51 Democrats 49. He might be wrong but the consolation is that this will be undone in 2016 (and again in 2018). He’s just the messenger as am I, so no pitchforks just yet, okay?

Once she got to the Senate Judd would have been disappointed that she wouldn’t be surrounded by people of intellect and character because that’s supposed to be the name of the game.

But everyone knows only Gallup and Rasmussen count!

Chuckles the Toad is roadkill.

If it is as close as the poll indicates Grimes is actually ahead. A lot of those undecideds have decided but they don’t want to say they are voting against McConnell.

I just doubt the polls are that close. She hasn’t run that good a race.

GOTV will be critical, and I mean critical. I hope Grimes has a good organization.

I heard that the Dems pulled funding from her campaign to focus on ‘winnable’ elections. I wonder what happened.

There has been a lot of talk her among her supporters (talk I took as being akin to whistling past the graveyard) that there is very little air time left for either side to purchase, that she has plenty of money in her pocket to buy all of that time that is available, and that the Democratic party has left its GOTV operation in place. It is that last part that gives me some hope.

Just did a little search. It seems the National Party just invested an additional $300,000 in the ground game. So far the Grimes campaign has
“Nearly 4,000 volunteers across KY (who have)
Reached out to nearly 400,000 voters thus far (they have held)
Over 3,000 meetings held with individual supporters (1:1s) (they currently have) Over 30 offices or staging locations for GOTV across the state.”

So Dan Rather reports a true story about Bush and gets fired because someone ratfucks his documentation. Chuck Todd blatantly makes a partisan endorsement of a candidate, suddenly becoming the news instead of reporting it, and his not-at-all-convincing apology is all we get?

I do hope his ass is fired quite soon in fact he should get canned BEFORE he can report any further on the election he has now become part of.

But I suppose that is too much integrity to ask of any one man or news organization. If there even is such a thing anymore. News organization that is.

How about we actually lose this election before we start saying " Wait until next time".

There was a man on the on-ramp to I-64 right in front of the city with a huge sign that Mitch McConnell is Playing Us For Fools. I was seeing lots of folks wave at him.

In an off year election GOTV is critical. I haven’t run into to many Republicans who are fired up and ready to go.

This isn’t “talk”, it’s fact. All over the country, ad time is gone. Ad time is purchased weeks or months in advance and there are only two weeks left in the campaign. It’s all been bought up. That’s the case in KY or IA or MI or anywhere else. It has nothing to do with Grimes or being a Grimes supporter, it’s the natural of political ad spending. Also, a point you seem to be missing is how cheap TV ads are in KY. It just doesn’t cost much to advertise in a small(ish), poor state.

The fact, not supposition, is that in 2016 if Democrats are in the minority, they will prevail once again because more vulnerable R seats are up for re-election than are Democrats. Other commentators have previously pointed that out. It’s a hope for the best, be prepared for the worst realism.

No kidding! This isn’t directed at Littlegirlblue, but one thing I’ve noticed this cycle is how quickly Democrats turn on a candidate who is struggling. Too many immediately assume the real problem is that the Democrat isn’t fighting hard enough (something rarely ever defined) or that they’re losing because they’re not Elizabeth Warren. Too many Democrats are willing to sell their own up and down the river the moment that candidate falls behind. It’s so unhelpful that I could literally kick them in the head. It helps no one but Republicans to have Democrats disparaging their candidates at the moment they most need their support. And we wonder why Democrats stay in that defensive crouch. When you’re getting beat up by even your own it can make you kind of skittish.

curious since i don’t live in kentucky what do the other polls show excluding Ras.

Jimmy Johnson said that, when he coached, he had to use different types of messages for different players.

In politics, the same holds.

Some voters are totally discouraged after the first hint of bad news. Others are the sort which get intensely motivated when the news is Doomsday. Between these two extremes are our voting sectors.

I suspect that the Rethugs, being naturally combative, may be the sorts of folks who get invigorated rather than depressed when they look at Sahil-type headlines for their candidates.

Somewhere there is a balance between constructive optimism and pipe dreams. The Democrats need to cheer a little more and hand-wring a little less. And they are PAST due in side-stepping the Progressive Purity Test. I wish every Senator was like Bernie and Liz, too, but Red States are Red States.

And NOW is the time to cheer-lead for and give cheers to Ms. Grimes.
