I lived very near that mall, back in 2003. In the summertime it was always crowded with young people… shopping, socializing and eating; the very definition of a “soft target.” It goes without saying, of course, that the perpetrators of this kind of attack are f-ing cowards, but damn… it still takes my breath away.

I don’t believe in a global right wing conspiracy, but I do believe in a global conservative phenomenon.
In America, had the conservative movement’s (i.e. Gingrich’s) theory of power based on obstructionism been relegated to AM talk radio, it might have run its life cycle a lot more quickly.
But Internet communication in the 90s — not to minimize a cable network clearinghouse (Fox) — provided a platform to propagate the formula, and there’s a lot of smart, ambitious, power hungry oligarchs out there, who’ve learned the right wing propaganda method, and are applying it elsewhere (Brexit). Trump is just the consummate American manifestation of it.
The “conservative movement” is a very serious problem, because, done right, it works. Especially if followers are religiously committed to the oligarch, armed, and trigger happy (ISIS).
