The use of “stressed out” is too colloquial in the lead. Perhaps the more neutral “under stress” would have been a better choice.

Would a helicopter with FLIR not be able to settle this guy fairly quickly?

Simply rule out everyone whose position is known, and move in on a human-sized, human-acting heat source.

It seems like he’s been making mistakes from the beginning, such as leaving cigarettes and dirty diapers laying around. Law enforcement know where he is, it’s only a matter of time.

p.s. when this story first broke, am i the only one who suspected that you tube gun nut from awhile back?

I live about an hour south of the search area and have been following the story closely. Wanna make a bet they capture him alive? I frame my comment around all of the recent lethal police shootings of unarmed black men.

Some local press reported during the past two weeks there was a shoot on sight order in place. We shall see.

Yes, he’s “survivalist,” AP. Whatever you do, don’t you dare call him a “right wing terrorist.” Such a thing cannot possibly exist. It is right there in the AP Style Book, right? “Never use the word ‘terrorist’ in the same sentence as ‘conservative’ or ‘right wing.’”

Because if the Liberal Media calls a right wing terrorist a right wing terrorist, all the right wingers who very explicitly sympathize with his aims and engage in precisely the kind of rhetoric the terrorist has acted upon will go batshit crazy and flood your office with torrents of abuse and threats of harm.

Generally speaking, surrendering is about as perilous an endeavor for a cop killer of any race as it is for a soldier to try to surrender to enemy troops in the middle of a fire fight. Only safe way to do it is get a lawyer and arrange a surrender and then call every news outlet in town in advance and make sure they’re on the scene with a camera.

So how much money are they going to spend on this massive man hunt? Had this guy just shot you, me, your family, or any other citizen all the cops would do is put up a few wanted signs and wait for someone to call them. So just as when a cop shoots a civilian they get special treatment (paid vacation), when someone shots a cop they also get special treatment?

if that’s the case (and I wouldn’t be at all surprised if it is.), any incentive he might have to surrender is kind of gone. of course, they plan on murdering him legally anyway, after a “fair” trial, so his only incentive is to take out as many of them as he can, before they kill him.

kind of one of the problems with the death penalty, removes any reason to give up peacefully.

I guess that depends on the state. In CA folks can be on death row for decades. It also can even allow them a type of celebrity.

In any case, you and I agree that the death penalty is counter productive
