Discussion: Plane Carrying Merkel To G-20 Makes Emergency Landing

And that all passenger jets don’t have backup systems? How much weight would a secondary emergency radio add?

They have all kinds of radios. Also too, very strict rules about when and where you continue when you are down to your last one.

One of the people that truly matters to be at the G-20 has plane problems and one that shouldn’t have gone because he’ll be hiding in his room is probably already there.

Well I’m forced to conclude AP screwed the story up. :open_mouth:

Just a hunch but it might have been a “secure” hotline super duper radio that wasn’t working - not the “normal” radios. They broadcast a squawk 7600 which is generally a communication failure. There might be requirements that recall the aircraft if that isn’t working with Merkel on board.
Again, just a guess.

They were squawking 7600 which is the transponder code for radio failure. I was just saying a plane doesn’t need a radio to fly. Unless there was something more going on, Merkel wasn’t in any real danger.

No, hang glider with no strap!

I’ve watched hang gliders in the Bavarian Alps and they are some crazy dudes.

That makes a lot of sense.

There’s always the possibility that the radio story was a cover story. Especially as they swapped out planes.

Maybe Merkel was going to scare the crap out of Trump with her Robert Mueller Halloween mask which she forgot to pack???

Personally, I think she scares the crap out of Spankee, mask or no.

The smell of jet fuel wafting over western Europe and the UK will be especially strong tonight.

Just now…
A British Airways Boeing 747-400, registration
G-CIVN performing flight BA-65 from London Heathrow,EN (UK) to Nairobi
(Kenya), was climbing out of Heathrow’s runway 27L when the crew stopped
the climb at 6500 feet due to being unable to retract the landing gear.
After working the checklists the crew decided to return to Heathrow,
climbed the aircraft to FL080 to dump fuel over the British Channel and
returned to HEathrow for a safe landing on runway 27L about 100 minutes
after departure. Emergency services reported a leak at the right body
gear.

Great flight deck crew. Awesome, and I’ve seen some good ones.

Unless it were a special radio a typical aircraft like that would have numerous and various means of communication.

Normally, especially on a four engine aircraft, the failure of one engine is considered a “non-event”, however, extended overwater might add conditions that would make the journey not worth a precautionary return to base.

Maybe with 45 cancelling meetings she though she could run out the clock and not be forced to breathe his air.
