Discussion for article #222623
It was pointed out by one of the weekend guys on FoxSports Radio that every other SEC Player of the Year has gone in the 1st round.
Gee… Wonder what made those GMs so cowardly – uhhh, conservative – uhhhh, CAUTIOUS about Sam?
(PS Waiting for some conservatard to say Sam was “shoving the gay agenda down our throats” when he kissed his partner after getting drafted.)
“Miami safety Don Jones posted a one-word tweet, “Horrible” shortly after Sam was drafted.”
Thank God we have the Miami Dolphins as upholders of virtue and righteousness.
Wait I could have sworn that the homophobes on the right told us in no uncertain terms that this guy was never going to get drafted and that he had no future in the NFL. Ooops
All the other stuff aside… watching a dedicated athlete achieve their goals is a beautiful thing.
He has all the motivation in the world to prove the doubters wrong… I hope he does.
I look forward to seeing Michael Sam pound the living shit out of the homophobic drama queens among the QBs and RBs. Now, if he could just cost the homophobic owners money, that would be icing on the cake.
Cynical Prediction: St. Louis agreed to waste their last, irrelevant pick, on Sam because he’s now like 8th on the depth chart behind some really good talent at his position. The guy will never play more than one NFL game in his career, and that will likely be pre-season. Set up to fail.
That’s not really how the draft works and teams don’t just throw away picks in that fashion. St Louis isn’t the perfect match but it’s not a bad one, and teams in later rounds will often take a gamble on a player like Sam who’s a great athlete but maybe not the perfect fit because they know he can grow. And by saying they “agreed” to draft him and immediately denigrating the pick as “irrelevant” you seem to be implying that Sam’s inclusion in the draft was a stunt that involved collusion among the NFL brass and/or other owners, which is frankly kind of ridiculous and insulting (but also a popular theory in certain quarters).
Yeah, right. Tom Brady was another one of those irrelevant, throw-away picks, drafted in the 6th round by a team that already had an all-pro quarterback.
Collusion is exactly what I imply. Hence, “cynical”. I don’t really believe it, when it comes down to it, but the thought crossed my mind. I’m well aware of how the draft works. St. Louis is pretty deep at that position, seems like they’d use that final pick to take a flyer on a player in a position of need. Also, the term “irrelevant” is used far and wide to describe the last player picked… Mr. Irrelevant… so it’s not really a stretch to apply that term to the last pick for each team.
You think the league didn’t have some high-level meetings to discuss this guy? The NFL is the most controlled and cautious league in sports. If they wanted to look good for doing the right thing, but still keep this guy off the field, this is literally the best way to do it.
Congrats Michael Sam!
Congrats to him. He was graded as a 3rd-4th round pick before coming out and then having a terrible showing at the combine. I honestly think the combine was as much a factor in his drop as anything else (see Teddy Bridgewater for another example of a workout costing players money). St. Louis is a solid fit. It’s the same state he played in college, where he was accepted. Plus, he’s not a starting DE, he’s a backup or rotation guy. Good pass rusher, will need work on pretty much everything else. If he earns a spot on the team, he’ll add solid depth.
Guys like Michael Sams could make it cool to be gay, en masse.
Him being selected in the 7th round has nothing to do with him being openly gay. That is just where, as projected, he compared to other based soley on his professional abilities. Just because he did well in College, to include being SEC Defensive Player of the Year(NOT Player of the Year), doesn’t mean he has a future at the pro level. There have been many Heisman Trophy winners(Best Player in all of College Football) who went undrafted, ie Charlie Ward, Chris Weinke and Jason White, while other under the current 7 round draft would not have been drafted, Ty Detmer, Eric Crouch, Doug Flutie, etc…and many were drafted in 5th,6th and 7th rounds.
Sam’s problem is not that he is openly gay, but he is too small to play defensive end and too slow to be an outside linebacker. He will most likely be used as a reserve OLB or Defensive end in passing situations and on special teams, which is about where a 7th rounder ends up playing.
