They should not be confused,
a) There is an infestation of deplorables in Texas,
b) There is an infestation of deplorables at the GOP primaries nationwide,
c) Cruz is an unprincipled ambitious SOB that will turn on a dime if it provides him an advantage, just like Mitt Romney.

Cruz won’t get out the TX Republican base unless he publicly blows Trump on a regular if metaphorical basis. His favorables tanked after the convention, because he wasn’t on board the Trumptanic. He’s barely climbed out of that hole, and he’s too unlikable to get anyone but Republicans to vote for him, so he’s going to need loyalty to Trump to transfer to him, and he will debase himself to get it.

The problem for Cruz is that statewide, Trump isn’t really any more popular than he is.
