Say what you will about Snowden, at least he’s been discerning with what he’s released, and its started a healthy conversation.
What Manning did was much worse, in my opinion - she’s demonstrably put lives in danger. However, her treatment by the US once taken into custody should be considered a national source of shame.
Why did s/he join the Army in the first place ?

Nonsense. She did nothing of the sort, and Gates himself said so.
The Iraq War ended early as a result on the non-renewal of the SOFA agreement, largely due to the release of the Collateral Murder video and other incidents revealed through Wikileaks.
So who knows how many Iraqi’s and Americans are NOT DEAD due to Chelsea’s brave actions?

Well, I’m afraid I’ll need to read up a bit on the subject before replying intelligently… my original comment was based off of my previous reading on the subject a long while ago. My apologies if its been demonstrated to be false.
