I think what I respect the most about Nancy Pelosi’s approach here is its fundamental professionalism. This isn’t some made-up messaging scheme. This is her identifying yet another huge issue raised by the president’s intransigence, and taking necessary steps to address it. That has political consequences, of course. Any communication on this to the president will be public, given the nature of the event. People will discuss what she is doing. But as they do so, the contrast between a professional going about the business of trying to govern, and our petty, out of his depth president, is ever clearer. In other words, I like the fact that her actions are political in the best democratic sense: based on definable, defendable goals articulated in public in a manner that allows people to make judgements of their own about what’s going on. And I suspect that raw competence is going to prove to be the greatest tool against Trump, at least from within Congress.

The suspense is killing me, waiting to see how Trump responds. I thought he’d be madly tweeting by now. He probably has his lawyers scrambling to find some way to force it to happen in the chamber anyway. Hire ex-Blackwater security goons or something. We’ll hear from him when they tell him no way, she’s in control. The tweets will be AMAZING.
