Nancy won an important round, but recall that HRC won a bunch of them too and then Comey happened. Trump has always had someone or something to bail him out, sometimes before disaster hits, or afterwards. In this case, his voters who do view the Trump presidency as a mythical last chance to extend white male dominance and impose white supremacy on an increasingly diverse Republic stick with him because he is the hired gun to deliver on that promise. What potentially makes this chapter somewhat different is that the myth at the heart of his white nationalist fantasy dream, the wall, is crumbling. With it may go the loyalty and commitment of his base. Weâre seeing it in polling data, but we need to push the GOP hard in order to save the Republic.
We still have to get the govât opened. We need to apply public pressure to a clearly rattled GOP to get them to break. They will not break on their own.

And right where heâd be gloating and tweeting and holding a press conference to wave his toadstool in everyoneâs faces if he were in her shoes, she just subtly twists the knife with the ole âadult in the roomâ follow-up. No gloating. No razzing. Nothing. Just business. Further highlighting the juxtaposition, and making his infantile nature stand out all the more stark relief.
McConnell and the rest of the GOP better be very afraid. Trump doesnât give a flying fuck about policy or ideology or party loyalty and doesnât understand any of it really anyway. He is entirely beholden to his narcissism before any of that. While he may be tethered somewhat by his desire for re-election and what polls tell him about his base, Nancy is sending a clear message that she is now the gatekeeper of him being able to claim any wins for the next two years. Guess how that influences his priorities.
