Discussion: Paula Deen In Hot Water Again For Tweeting Brownface Photo

Not only can’t she spell splainin’…

Rick apparently never said it…

Unless this clip counts but it’s a bit fishy, maybe Dinesh posted it…

I’m glad that you do understand  I was kind of mocking the way most US Americans treat the whole issue of anyone from the region. Race, class, and nationality get so bundled up that it’s frighteningly hard to understand it. My Chilean born great-grandmother use to look down on anyone from Puerto Rico even if they were White and Affluent. And yes, this kind of stuff really does make things worse.

I fall on your side in this matter, because the dark makeup was to make him look more like a specific person, not a racial characterization.

And, while Desi had a light complexion, Lucille was really pale in contrast:

If we just react to facial makeup, we get this:

IF it is being used to mock a racial minority. Desi Arnez was Cubano. In fact, he was White Cubano. Bobby Deen’s use of Brown Face here is incredibly racist. People who engage in cosplay are told under no circumstance should you make your face up to appear any other skin tone unless the character you are cosplaying is from a species other than human. Some people still do it, but they usually get a very strong negative reaction from their fellows.

So, pretty much, use it only when playing non-humans. And even then, be very careful and consider what you are doing.

Yeah, but most people don’t remember that kind of thing.

And I was shocked to find Martin Sheen doing the voice of the villain in Mass Effect.

Oh look. It’s the outrage of the day. Yawn.

Haven’t you learned your lesson by now?

Man oh man, she just doesn’t understand. Proving once again that she is a true racist.

Racists.

For me, I am glad she’s off the air.

Too much butter, too much lard. And way too much fake drawn out y’aaallllllls! She lives in Connecticut for christ sakes.

While I can understand that for practical reasons a cold hard rule like the cosplay one makes sense, in reality it is an overreaction to avoid a bad situation (a risk averse strategy). It’s saying no one can be trusted to use makeup in a sensitive manner. Instead of using our judgment on a case by case basis, “let’s impose a rule to avoid differences in opinions”. I can’t play a very good Sulu (can I wear a wig or is that too insensitive?) because Al Jolson and others were assholes?

Not that I am saying the spawn of Paula Deen is a sensitive person.

He was the American president for many wonderful years on The West Wing. Hopefully people’s amnesia will extend to his paternity of Charlie Sheen.

Then there’s the martial arts/action film star Carlos Norris. Just sayin’.

I really don’t think you understand what is at the core of why this is wrong. And given the number of successful cosplayers who avoid using any makeup to change their appearance (wigs do not count, incidentally) and still successfully play the character, what you are doing is reacting the same way as someone trying desperately to defend the Confederate Battle Flag.

The picture is from 2011…why she posted it now is hard to fathom.

I have Asperger moments a la Sheldon Cooper when I hear “begs the question” used to generate a question.

Because her 15 minutes are in the rear view mirror.

“[Paula Deen’s] son appears to have darkened his skin to look more like Cuban actor, Desi Arnaz.”

So who’s the white guy behind them supposed to be in that picture? Fred Mertz?

Instead of shoving chocolates in her mouth like Lucy in an unstoppable fashion, she should just shove fucking sticks a butter down her throat. That’ll keep her busy and shut her up permanently.
