The same thing applies to the Watergate break-in. Nixon was going to win in a route over McGovern regardless, and there was absolutely no political need whatsoever for anybody in the Nixon campaign to even think about installing bugs in the DNC offices. The “Plumbers” who’d been initially recruited to go after Ellsberg in 1971 were chafing at their lack of activity in '72, and the political thugs in the administration put them to work, to Nixon’s eventual destruction.
