Optimistic words, only 14 years too lateā€¦

I despise this lying POS every bit as much as dubya, and I voted for him twice. Have been greatly disappointed and deceived. Will never again vote Democrat, unless it would be Bernie or similar, which will never be allowed to happen by the oligarchs / MIC / banks / energy industry who own Obama / the government.

Interestingā€¦ The only lying POS I see hereā€¦ is you.

He said the terroristsā€™ goal is to frighten Americans into changing how they live, but ā€œAmericans will never give in to fear.ā€

ā€¦ I dunno Mr. Prezā€¦ have you checked the basket of deplorables lately?..

So true. The pants wetters and the politicians who seek their votes are ready to leap on any threat, real or perceived, to limit freedoms and human rights, giving actual terrorists exactly what they want.

Sorry, Obama. Some Americans are resilient and resourceful, but the ones who are hysterical and unproductive are louder.

ā€œHe said the terroristsā€™ goal is to frighten Americans into changing how they liveā€

And they have been successful far beyond their wildest dreams. Patriot Act, NSA, secret courts, no warrant entries, secret FBI investigations, illegal surveillance of Moslems and illegal incarceration without charges, militarized police, gun nuts shooting anyone not caucasian, attacking Moslem women in the airports and on the streets, denying Moslems the right to fly on airplanes, shutting down peaceful protests, rendering people to foreign countries to be tortured just because they are Moslem and then when they have gotten an innocent person, refusing to admit it or atone for it, state laws changed to allow anyone to carry a gun with no restrictions, Islamophobia everywhere, arresting little kids because they assume heā€™s making a bomb, and the beat goes on ā€¦

No, Mr. President. Everyone has either changed or had the changes forced on them by a fearful society from you on down to the dog catcher. If there were ever a nation steeped in fear, it is the US. Why do you think so many people insist on carrying fire arms? It isnā€™t because they think the guns make them look manly. Remember that guy who fired at a pickup truck and then got upset because the cops took away his gun? He said he was too afraid to leave his house unless he had it. What is the excuse that cops invariably give when they kill an unarmed suspect? ā€œI felt that I was threatened.ā€

Have you seen the gop/bag party in the last 8 years? Fear, racism, etc. all aimed at you!

Fear and extremism is all they have and have had for over 4 decades. Take a good look at their candidate!

Frankly, I hope after this 15th anniversary, we can let go a little longer in-between commemorations, and do less dramatic memorial services on this day without all the bells and whistles. Iā€™d like to see a more toned-down meditative commemoration, without all the fanfare personally, and a little more refined way of dealing with this horrible tragedy that the country fell victim to. One in which we can let go by demonstrating we eventually are learning to overcome this tragic event. I donā€™t see the purpose in re-traumatizing the nation with old footage, or commercializing the tragedy to sell us on the new World Trade Center (which they try to do even though its referred to as a way to show we ā€˜can rebuild and canā€™t be beaten by terrorismā€™.) The media would never admit thatā€™s what theyā€™re doing in commercializing the event, but it seems like its part of the event now every year. Meanwhile, the new World Trade Tower is in some serious need of being sold by the Port Authority as it is costing them a small fortune and not meeting expectations to be rented out as planned.

I hope we can get to the point where we can all accept going at least 5 years between gatherings, when dignitaries and politicians get together for this day is not such a bad thing. It seems the media has turned this into another big show eventā€¦missing the more important focus of the what happens in Congress when theyā€™re forced to focus on the victims and first responders of 9/11. Iā€™m not sure this gathering is the best way any longer to remember the victims or the day. Maybe someone in Congress can make this a national day of remembrance, or a ā€œFirst Responders Dayā€, or a ā€œDay of Remembrance to National Serviceā€ and give federal and state workers the following Monday off, with the rest of the country remembering it in their own special wayā€¦but I guess someone figured out that cost money too, so weā€™re not going to do that any time soon. It may be controversial to suggest luminaries now gathering yearly on 9/11 should give it a restā€¦but I guess thatā€™s what keeps them in the light as luminaries, with the rest of us just a bunch of dim bulbs wanting to keep this day a quiet and personal commemoration of sorts.

Btw, I have my own personal sorrows on this date related to 9/11 but only in proximity to my fatherā€™s death the next day in 2001 in which for a week I sat shiva while simultaneously watching the events of 9/11 played over and over again on a continuous loop while grieving my dadā€™s passing. I mention this here every year it seems and only because my own peak emotions this time of year are always there, just below the surface, each year this commemoration takes place. His death was unrelated to what happened in NY but still, I find ways to emotionally link the two.

Everything you said 1000 times. I have not been comfortable since the day the word ā€œhomelandā€ became the American version of ā€œfatherlandā€, and we have been on that fatherland road ever since via all of the things you mentioned. We are now to the point where we have a candidate within the fatherland mold. That someone like Trump has been taken seriously in this country, much less has the potential to be elected president, is a success I doubt even bin Laden could have imagined. We talk a lot about the racists in Trumpā€™s base. But we shouldnā€™t forget the cowering, irrationally frightened Republicans that want their strongman leader to protect them from the big bad terrorists, not with cunning and strategy as Obama has done, but with bluster and bombs and endless war and authoritarianism. They want testosterone on steroids for their CIC, yet they are so insecure and afraid of their own shadows that they consider the men at Gitmo to be boogie men with such supernatural powers that we canā€™t risk imprisoning and trying them on US soil without it endangering the entire country. Whatā€™s been done to our country in the name of fear in the last 15 years is an abomination.

My sympathies and understanding. Both my brotherā€™s and fatherā€™s deaths are linked to this date. My brother, because 9/11 is the day they were supposed to have operated on his cancer, but instead announced they had found metastases in the pre-op scan so he was no longer a candidate for surgery, thus beginning the final countdown to his death 8 months later. My Dad, because as a WWII vet, this date and his obsession with its aftermath led to his death a month and a half later, as it did with so many other WWII vets.

ETA: I forgot to mention I totally agree with the rest of your post about how 9/11 is commemorated.

So what is the Repressiveā€™s current fixxation on gun bans and disarming the average citizen when crime and violence are at the lowest level in decades? It certainly isnā€™t conccern for anyoneā€™s Safety except their own. Just like the corrrupt politicans in Mexico who gave or sold control to the cartels to ensure their own personal safety from being stood agaist a wall and offered a blindfold and last cigarette.

As several others have noted here, the ones giving in to fear are the Repugs and their supporters. In point of fact, the GOP has used the threat of another terrorist attack (by the way, there have been more than a few) over the last 15 years to pervert the Constitution, to install authoritarians and meddlers in our governmental systems. For shame; sadly, they have none. Now we are expected to elect a second-rate Mussolini? Please do not do that. Get out the vote, defeat Hillaryā€™s Opponent and restore some sanity to this country. Letā€™s clear some of the Tea Party scum out of our Congress, while we are at it.

Iā€™m glad Iā€™m not the only one who dislikes the term ā€œhomelandā€. From the start, and has been proven since, the term is a way for the authoritarians to pass laws and create bureaucracies aimed at curtailing civll rights for both American citizens and people hoping to come to the US, all in the name of ā€œhomeland securityā€.

This article could use a postscript about the booing in reaction to POTUSā€™s video at the NFL games around the country.
