Discussion: Olive Branch: Sanders Gets To Name Some Members Of Platform Committee

He’s sounding more and more every day like a crusty old fart - whatever a crusty old fart sounds like.

Bernie Bros complain, "If he doesn’t get to name all of the members, this vote is ā€˜rigged’ " in 5, 4, 3, 2…

What’s Sanders giving in return? Nothing, you say? That’s hardly fair and democratic (or Democratic), is it?

And where’s the quid pro quo for the democratic party?

Remember the first few seasons of The Walking Dead when the zombies were still considerably dangerous? But then, as time went on, they became less of a threat and more of a nuisance. Easily vanquished in small numbers, but still ambling about moaning and whining and getting in the way. The zombie threat was replaced by the threat of menacing humans: the Governor, the Wolves, and now Negan and the Saviors.

This is the Sanders’ campaign as it blindly stumbles into the flaming pond of gasoline. Bernie’s walkers represent a threat, but they are relatively easily dispatched (less than 25% of them say they would not vote for Hillary), but having to deal with them means that you can’t focus completely on the real bad guys; Donald Trump and the Republican Party. And so the democratic party must distract the Sanders’ biters to keep them out of the way while fighting the real enemy.

Makes things more difficult, but in the end, just as Rick and his crew work together to pull victory from the jaws of defeat despite the zombie hoardes, the democratic party will do the same.

Under the new arrangement, the Washington Post reported Monday, Clinton
will appoint six representatives to the platform committee while Sanders
will appoint five.

That’s eleven. I’m sure that in appointing the remaining four members, Debbie Wasserman Schultz will be fully fair and impartial, without showing preference or bias to either candidate.

Snark aside, though, this is a good move by the DNC. Sanders has earned a seat at the table for 2016.

Very good. This is smart.

Yes, Bernie has earned a seat at the table, but Cornel West??

From Wikipedia:
West has called the U.S. a ā€œracist patriarchalā€ nation where white supremacy continues to define everyday life. ā€œWhite America,ā€ he writes, ā€œhas been historically weak-willed in ensuring racial justice and has continued to resist fully accepting the humanity of blacks.ā€ This has resulted, he says, in the creation of many ā€œdegraded and oppressed people hungry for identity, meaning, and self-worth.ā€ West attributes most of the black community’s problems to ā€œexistential angst derive[d] from the lived experience of ontological wounds and emotional scars inflicted by white supremacist beliefs and images permeating U.S. society and culture.ā€

Yeah, that will make for a good platform.

Dr. Cornel West, huh? I went and heard him speak at UC Santa Cruz while a student. I loved every second of it. Since Obama’s been elected, he’s become quite a shrill voice. I can’t take even a second of him criticizing Obama…

Good move. All good selections.

HE appointed Zogby, a total hack.

And Cornel West, who is an embarrassment to liberals everywhere, and who has almost no credibility within the black community.

DWS appointed Elijah Cummings as chairman—a man of impeccable honesty and character, and a man who does not suffer fools gladly.
If Cornel West misbehaves—and he will—Cummings will chew him up and spit him out in the most gracious manner imaginable.

Robert Reich is apparently already complaining that it isn’t fair because DWS and HRC both get to select members so it must all be rigged or something.

Here in Texas we’re used to angry, shouty, and possibly insane people writing party platforms. Isn’t that how it’s done?

There are some good names in Bernie’s list: Rep. Ellison and Bill McKibben.

I’m not so sure about Cornel West, as others have pointed out.

Of the remaining names, Neera Tanden and Rep. Lee are great additions, and the only person who might be better than Elijah Cummings would be John Lewis.

It is in Sander’s mind. Why? Because he didn’t get to name all of them. That’s how he (and his revolutionaries) work.

Oh, and watch them go totally apesh*t anyway if they don’t get to unilaterally dictate the entire platform.

Anything to get the tantrums to stop.

He can write the whole damn platform for all I care.

This could be a good move, at least as long as Sanders begins to play ball too. But just for comparison, in 2008 when Clinton came much closer to a ā€œvirtual tieā€ than Sanders did now – how many representatives did she get to select? It appears the fair number then was 0. Did anyone complain about undemocratic DNC then?

Ah, but they’re loyal puppets for Sanders. And that’s all that truly matters for Sanders.

Hell, I’m amazed he didn’t name Susan Sarandon, Tim Robbins, Jane Sanders, and Jeff Weaver.
