30 years ago: no. Now, hell yes!
Well certainly, an officer of the chapter would be compelled to express his regret that a few bad apples have to spoil a good time for everyone by breaking the rules.
Then, they might face âDouble Secret Probationâ
Hysterical: âBallsacagaweaâ has a touch of the luminous about it. âOffice of Compliance and Integrity,â however, has a positively fascistic ring to it.
Oh. Of course. Iâm not up on what the kids are saying these days, obviouslyâŚ
Hung like a horse?
So much for âHigher Educationâ in America. Am I wrong in assuming that this program is part of a larger program that is somehow tied up with a not insubstantial amount of money that flows into OSU in one way or another?
The solution, and the most effective penalty therefore, would be to take away some part of the programâs money and instead see that said money is spent on sensitivity training and classes which defeat this Neanderthal way of thinking and acting. Classes that would have to be taken and passed by Faculty as well as the students. Imagine, the two âclassesâ of people at a major university suddenly being placed equitably on the same level for once.
The key here is striping some of these overblown Faculty hirelings of their delusions of tin-plated âGawdhood.â
And while weâre about it, Iâll venture a guess that OSU isnât the only âschoolâ with problems of this nature.Perhaps it is high time that governing bodies at other institutions look into their own programs, before things become both ugly and public.
As opposed to a woman, who would by their standards (such as they are) be hung like a stud doughnut.
I have an idea of what it is, but Iâm not going to admit it publicly.
oops.
Full disclosure, I was a Section Leader in another Big Ten Band when I was in college.
I actually taught the section I was in as an incoming Transfer Student, before I was a band member.
As an Instructor and as a Section Leader I always felt that the exercises and techniques I was asking for were difficult and demanding enough without piling on some bullshit hazing requirements. I do also recall the Band Director explicitly announcing that there was to be no hazing of band members, and that you could be expelled from the Band for engaging in that. I admired that man a great deal and still do.
I donât know if there was any history of that sort of thing going on before he arrived there, but if there was it stopped. And we never had it.
In order to play in a group like that you have to have a high level of musical talent, excellent physical coordination, some degree of physical stamina (not to mention actual strength in the case of some instruments), good memorization skills, and a bit of a competitive streak. And you have to be willing to work hard because there may be an Alternate waiting to take your spot. In other words, a College Band requires qualifications that are in some sense elite. I always felt that if a Freshman could make it through tryouts and the Band Camp week, that ought to be all the âInitiationâ they needed to pass.
Ohio State has what is considered to be a really good college band. I donât see why they need to engage in this kind of moronic behavior. And they make the rest of us look bad by association.
Gee ⌠thatâs a nice story.
We used to call it âAround the worldâ
(a female can âreceiveâ a man in 3 places, completing all 3 in one night is a triple crown or going around the world)
A question that needs answering for sureâŚour culture is suffering
That the band director perhaps with the Pres. of the University, a policeman and a lawyer there too did not in one meeting after taking over sayâŚno more as of right now and if anyone does this you are out periodâŚout of the band and kicked out of school period!!! Darn it I hate that now even Ohio State has joined the list of being let down âŚcanât look at the band the same way anymore will have this in the back of my mindâŚ
Well that explains why I had no idea what it wasâŚ
Has the NCAA vacated all the teamâs wins yet?
One thingâs for sure: no one would ever confuse these children with âyoung adults.â
Band Directors donât have the authority to kick a student out of school, but they do have the authority to say âyou are out of this band for goodâ. Thatâs exactly what the Director of my college band said he 'd do to any student who engaged in hazing in our band back in 1977.
It isnât rocket science.
One of the things that differentiates a college band from a high school band is a much stronger sense of tradition and historical continuity with in the college ranks. This is primarily due to a much more active presence of alumni. Students are much more in tune with the history of the organization because they often learn of if first hand from their predecessors.
Another major differentiator is the fact that most college bands have a level of self-organization that doesnât exist at the high school level. Some college bands are almost entirely self-run, in some cases the students even write the music and the drill performed on the field. In any case the students have a much more personal investment in the organization than in high school and with some experience will come to feel that they âownâ it.
If the traditions of the organization arenât moronic or embarrassing, this works to the advantage of the people running it. The organization can and often does work like a well-oiled machine.
But weeding out bad traditions can be tough. The Alumni are working against you for one thing. You really have to be willing to tear the organization down to nothing and rebuild it from scratch if necessary. You have to be willing to kick anybody out who wonât give up the old way of doing things.
Sounds like the Ohio State University didnât quite have the stomach for that.
No.
Decades. Some of the reworked âsongsâ are from the 40âs to 70âs. While it is bad, I donât know of one gay band member who has quit because of the sophomoric antics. Women are another matter. I donât think a friend of mine would have lasted if she didnât have her band member brother to protect her.
âBallsacagaweaâ is out-and-out funny. Iâm sorry if my laughter offends people but how can you look at that nickname and not laugh.
