Discussion for article #225914
The band also generated more than $30 million in ad revenue for the university last year.
The bottom line fly in the ointment.
I was a member of another Big Ten band 30+ years ago, and our Director expressly forbid hazing.
BTW, the Band Department at our school routinely hired outside the ranks of alumni. I don’t know if that was their official policy or not, but effectively that’s what they did. I think that’s part of the problem at tOSU. People get used to bad behavior to the extent that they can’t even see it. It takes an Outsider to clean things up.
Ugly situation - and one that may have been handled far better - but since the details are not all out - it is hard to tell.
It may well be a case of “executive management standards” colliding head on (and uncompromisingly) with “operational leadership & management practicalities” - so even in the best possible scenario for the Band Director - best case, he would seem to have been pursuing incremental reformation of behavior - and the new President will be satisfied with nothing less than zero tolerance. Perfect enemy of Good? or Good is not Good Enough?
So he’s above reproach? Obviously the investigation should be ignored? White privilege
