Discussion for article #235440
Righteous arrest, Officer Kidder.
¨Kidder says a relative gave him the body camera following the deadly officer-involved shooting in Ferguson, Missouri.¨
Of course, his department should have gotten it for him, but I’d sure rather run into a cop who voluntarily wears a body cam than one who didn’t want to wear one. You have to believe that knowing someone will review an arrest most likely tempers your actions.
Article does not say how suspect was subdued. Now if only NRA supported Smart guns the officer and public need not be fearful of dangerous person overcoming officer and seizing his gun because it would fire only in the officer’s hand.
Wow. Shows how fucked up things have gotten when headline reads, effectively, “Cop Shows Restraint, World Stunned.”
Still, he deserves to be commended.
Have you heard the one about the sadist and the masochist?
Masochist says “beat me, hurt me”
Sadist says “No”

OK, shifting the context but one of the things that struck me was the cop was a combat veteran and he was able to think clearly, observe, and make good decisions in a dangerous situation. About 99.999 percent of the people who buy guns thinking they’re going to be able to make those sorts of judgments are seriously kidding themselves. One night some months ago I was out walking home after an evening business meeting and before I knew what was happening a guy came running straight at me. I stepped off the sidewalk, ready to shove my shoulder bag at him, and he kept running—it was just a kid in a track suit, probably a competitive runner, getting some miles in after dinner. If I’d been a panicky, paranoid person with a gun in my pocket, with a few more milliseconds to think—well, that wasn’t how it was. But it could have been. Happens every day, and it doesn’t have to.
I hate to point this out, but it’s amazing that an unarmed white guy has to literally beg to be shot by a cop and still can’t make it happen.
Showing that restraint by police in use of force is indeed possible. Take that, South Carolina!
Good point.
Yep, officer literally falls backward after tripping over his own feet and the suspect is just about in his face yet he still doesn’t pull the trigger. At that moment backup arrives and the suspect surrenders.
Why does my spidey sense tell me it would have turned out very differently if the man were black.

Cannot exist in same world.
It’s worse than that. You could go buy a gun and suddenly believe yourself to be some self-appointed neighborhood watchman. And we ALL know how that story ends.
Finally, a police story with a happy ending.
Good job by the officer. One can only hope he would use the same restraint regardless of race of suspect, but not too much restraint he gets himself hurt or even killed. God, it’s a hard job.
I don’t know about your spidey sense, but a look at the news over the last couple of years should tell you that if the man were black, he’d be dead as a doornail.
Good but dangerous move by the Cop, now the murdering dirt bag doesn’t get what he wants “Death” he has to live through his act of killing his girl friend and relive it every waking hour, minute, second.
I don’t think we should require of an officer, in a possible life or death situation, to use something that could fail for a power outage or a computer glitch. Sometimes guns jam for no apparent reason and that should be the only cause for an officer to be worry about his/her weapon.
What a courageous person and fine policeman this man is. Wishing all of them were made from the same mold.
