Discussion for article #231273

And, once again, cue the right on Obama playing the ā€œrace card,ā€ 'cause we donā€™t have any racism in America, do we.

Nah. No racism. Well, OK, maybe a little. But itā€™s mostly really reverse racism thatā€™s the problem now. And that Divider-in-Chief Obama is exploiting it! If he werenā€™t setting the races against each other weā€™d all be getting along ju-ust fi-ine.

But seriously folks, it was always there, always expressed in dog whistles, until Limbaugh et al. dusted it off and, as NCSteve and others have pointed out, made it OK again. Itā€™s overt, in words, in images, in actions. All these county GOP heads sending each other hi-larious images of Obama as a witch doctor and watermelons on the White House lawn. Itā€™s like in some ways weā€™ve lost 50 or 60 years of progress. I remember when Obama was elected, marveling that evidently we were ready for a black president after all. Six years later, clearly some of us werenā€™t as ready as others. Racismā€™s a tough one, as is fear and hatred of those different from us generally. Iā€™m not aware of any society thatā€™s got it just right. A committed effort and a lot more time, I guess, is what itā€™s going to take.

The Obamas are thoughtful people. In fact, they have been probably analyzing every aspect of Mr. Obamaā€™s Presidency in terms of ā€œraceā€.

Maybe they are making a calculation that the deciding 5% of the electorate we discussed yesterday will be favourably impressed by these admissions of their having experienced racism.

What do you mean by ā€œyou folksā€?

Should I take offense if someone asks me to pick something off a shelf for them. Itā€™s happened to me on several occasions: Target, Giant, and once in a head shop in Adams Morgan, an African American little person asked me to pick HIM up so he could see the porn magazines on the top shelf of the newstand.

I (aging white woman) get asked to do so frequently, mostly by women, because Iā€™m tall enough to reach the top shelf. Thatā€™s okay. The racism part comes in when customers assume the black guy just works there and can do little tasks for customers.

The Obama could give the Wallendas a pointer or two on tightrope walking but the disrespect dumped on this couple and the intentional attempts to hobble this Presidency from racists, media elements and apologists for the Bush Interregnum continues unimpeded.

"Itā€™s one thing for me to be mistaken for a waiter at a gala. Itā€™s another thing for my son to be mistaken for a robber and to be handcuffed, or worse, if he happens to be walking down the street and is dressed the way teenagers dress," he told the magazine.

Meanwhile, Iā€“the whitest whitey ever to radiate whitenessā€“had the opposite experience.

Back in the 70s, I was dressed in some bright polyester fugly work garb when I worked for a fancy hotel in High School. One of my jobs was to clean the cigarette-butts out of the sand-filled urns in the lobby. So, Iā€™m dressed like a clown and pawing through sand for used cigarettes in a hotel lobby, when a very nice lady asks ā€œExcuse me, sir, do you work here?ā€

I was mortified. ā€œAAHHHHHHHH!!! This woman thinks I might NOT work here!! I might just be dressed in these ridiculous clothes, sifting for Marlboro Light filters becauseā€¦ BECAUSE I WANT TO!! Dear God, let someone shoot me right now.ā€

Mrs. Obama knows what she experienced. Itā€™s interesting that your explanation for what constitutes racism must naturally trump Mrs. Obamaā€™s actual experience. As though the feelings and experiences of blacks donā€™t exist unless sanctioned by a white person. Oh, yeah, thatā€™s called white privilege.

As a musician, I have played at some clubs so bad that to ā€œwork thereā€ (even on the bandstand) was defintely a step up from actually CHOOSING to go into the place.

I think itā€™s awesome that a) Obama is talking about this and b) he knows he is basically providing Fox News with its distraction for the day. Those Fox a$$es are so predictably reactive.

If I had a choice between asking a 4ā€™11" 64-year-old Target employee and a friendly 6ā€™9" buffed-out African American woman for help getting something off a shelf, I might ask Mrs. Obama for a hand, too.

Other than that, carry on.

Donā€™t feed the troll.
