Why do police departments need taxpayer money for this? Why donât they just spend some of their Civil Forfeiture âfound moneyâ on the body cameras rather than buying, say, Margarita blenders?

Very good move by Obama. Practical, feasible and cost effective. Of course the RW will holler and whine but instead of trading words and insults, Obama is once again showing leadership. It will be very interesting to see how the GOP congress reacts to this modest request for funds. My guess is that they will want to include it with a 10 billion dollar appropriation to build that dang fence along the US/Mexican border.

Unfortunately for America, the body of the electorate that votes for Republicans likes it when unarmed black teenagers are executed in the street and allowed to lay there bleeding on the pavement for hours. They find such an event a reaffirmation of their bigotry, and no Republican politician dare take that away from them, particularly since stoking the flames of hatred and fear works so stunningly well among the amygdala-dominated.

Unfortunately, weâve seen theyâre immune to the prospect. McCullough and Nixon knew damn well what would happen, they knew the backlash, and that didnât dissuade them from assuring the outcome they wanted. They in fact doubled-down by announcing it after dark to guarantee the response that occurred. Their arrogance is stunning.
They sent in the National Guard to protect white neighborhoods and businesses but let Ferguson burn, because they knew the reaction from America at large would be that the protestors are nothing more than animals and that the thug deserved what he got. And we have Morning Joe reinforcing just that sentiment on the nationâs only âliberalâ cable news channel.

Assuming body cameras are put in place where they are needed, how long before the police figure out the best method to âaccidentallyâ obscure the lens when it is convenient to do so?
I think the usual position of authority figures if you have nothing to hide you should not object to being searched. By extension if you are not going to abuse you should not object to the cameras.
Hereâs a storyâŚA White guy with an authority problem sees a Black kid walking on a dark sidewalk and decides there must something wrongâŚthe kid is Black. So he walks up to the kid and says âHey buddyâŚwhat are you doing hereâ The kid turns around and sees a man wearing civilian clothing with no badgesâŚno uniform. He says âWho the fuck are youâ. Just as anyone would under those circumstances. The White guy says âIâm with securityâ and the kid respondsâŚâyou got any IDâ. The White guy doesnât have any ID because he is not âwith securityâ and his authoritarian sensibilities are in rage over Black kids defiance. The Black kid says âfuck offâ when the White guy doesnât produce ID and starts to walk away. The White guy loses it and shoves the kid from the rear. The Black kid turns and clocks the White guy knocking him to the ground. White guy is now insane with rage and shoots the Black kid. Dead.
What are the chances this highly probable scenario is reported by White guy as it actually happened? Black kid is dead. He canât refute. White guy can confess to the murder or lie. The chances are zero he tells the truth.
Joe of course was not there and has no idea what actually happened. He couldnât. But its a Black kid. What are the chancesâŚbased solely on White guys recantation that Joe Scarborough calls Black kid a thug and thinks he deserved to die. About 100 %.
Another story. Black kid is jaywalking and White Cop tells him to âget the fuck back on the sidewalkâ and this goes down in a community where Blacks are routinely treated this way by a near all White police department. Black kid says âfuck you manâŚwhy you talking to me like thatâ. Cop gets angry and pulls up to the Black kid and screeches his brakes behind him. He opens his car door in a rage and it hits the Black kid and it bounces shut on his leg. Now in full rage mode cop grabs the Black kid and the Black kid resits. A scuffle results and the Black kid runs away from it. White cop now so enraged he is no longer in control of his thinking shoots Black kid. Black kid stops and turns with hands up. Cop shoots again and again. Black kid dies.
What are the chances White cop recalls the story as it happened? Zero. What are the chances there will be a differences in what White people claim they saw and Black people claim they saw? 100 %. What are the chances it goes down in favor of the Cop? 100 %. What are the chances that Joe Scarborough who was no more in Ferguson than he was in SanfordâŚdecides Black kid was a thug and deserved a bullet?

The cameras are useless if the Cops arenât required to wear them and have them turned on. You can bet they will not suffer if they donât use them in âinconvenientâ situations.
I am pretty sure Ferguson has a polygrapher. All police departments do and they use them often. So where is Wilsonâs polygraph results? You can bet a million bucks if he passed one it would be all over the place. His polygraph is right where your breathalyzer exam isâŚwhen you are stopped for âdriving erraticallyâ and the Cop knows you are not drunk. They donât do that test if they donât think the results are going to work for them. They claim your eyes were blurry and you were slurring your words.
I doubt anyone thinks Wilson wouldâve passed a polygraph test. Includeing the Cops and thatâs why he was not given one. Nor will he ever take one.
Whatâs that thing the Cops often sayâŚâIf you have nothing to hideâŚâ
Cameras and other machines arenât the solution. Cops learn to finesse their use of them and defeat the intended purposes of them.

The only people who do not want body cameras are criminals and bad cops. I side with neither, bring on the cams please.

i would edit your statement to: the only people who do not want body cameras are criminals. the percentage of cops who would qualify as âgoodâ are a vanishing minority. there are no bad apples, there are criminals and individuals complicit in their silence.
