Discussion for article #228167
Two years ago there was no such thing as ISIS but we ignored the Syrian civil war while the problem got bigger.
Obama then said that the U.S. address militant groups that gain strength during civil war and conflicts throughout the Middle East between Sunnis and Shiites.
Hate to be pedantic, but could we possibly replace the foregoing with, well, an actual coherent sentence?
Also, I believe the sixth word in what purports to be a direct quote of something said by the President of the United States should be “we’re” not “were.”
Hint,Maybe ?
“Hawks in Congress argue that the Islamic State threat shows the folly of
cutting military spending. Speaking at a conference Thursday, Rep.
Howard “Buck” McKeon (R-Santa Clarita), who chairs the House Armed
Services Committee, said funding cuts had “hollowed out” America’s armed
forces.”
Obama’s interview will be on 60 Minutes tonight. It would be far better to listen to him than read what this reporter writes about it.
It seems U.S. intelligence has had a long string of failures, perhaps ever since the founding of the CIA. Some of the failures may have been supported by another failure: the failure of Presidents effectively to administer CIA.
Buck McKeon represents a city in California called Palmdale, and the top two employers are Lockheed Martin and Northrop Grumman and the seventh is Boeing. So this “hollowed out military” hysteria could be a make-work project or maybe could be more substantial.
" “Jim Clapper has acknowledged that they underestimated what had been taking place in Syria,” Obama said in an interview with CBS’ “60 Minutes” that will air Sunday night, referencing the director of intelligence, James Clapper.”
Clapper is a known liar.
This link will help explain where ISIS came from:

Two years ago there was al Qaida in Iraq (AQI.) Same Goldstein, different initials.
Yeah, let’s insert ourselves into the Syrian civil war like McCain wanted. Here’s a photo of him meeting with his pals on “our side.”

It’s very easy to say “we ignored the problem.” It’s not as easy to suggest what actions specifically would be to our benefit.
Yup. Bad enough, and so consistently faulty, that U.S. Presidents would have been better served getting their information from the news media (not just the U.S. media, of course).
The President also said that we [o]verestimated the ability and will of the Iraqi army to fight… but that doesn’t seem to bear mentioning. But then again… he keeps calling our current actions counter-terrorism against actual TERRORIST but the media seems to think we’re at war with Iraq (again) and Syria – so nobody in the press is listening at all, to what the President is saying.
Maybe he has nothing to say. You know, credibility issues.
You only hear about the failures.
Nobody ever runs the story “CIA Totally Saw al Qaeda Coming.”
OK. So…Clapper did see ISIL coming and lied about it so he’d look bad?
Those you assume are not listening because of a lack of credibility can continue to not listen, can continue to not believe what the president says; but in the end it will be the president who will issue the orders and make the decisions about any actions against ISIL/ISIS. Our elected representatives don’t want to even discuss the issue and definitely don’t want to make any decisions if it will adversely affect holding on their Congressional seat. So for now and the future he’s The Man.
The right wing bubble is gonna have a field day with this.
This is what I was referring to. I apologize for not including a link for edification:
OK. And this relates to the intelligence community underestimating ISIL how?
If you were POTUS would you be happy with an intelligence community underestimating our adversaries and/or lying about it to defend their jobs as Clapper did?. if you cannot see this then us debating here it is pointless.
