“Their limited mission — which has not yet been approved — would focus on training and advising beleaguered Iraqi troops”
When has this idea ever worked?

Yellow belly Iraqis? Say it aint so…
The president has/is done/doing all he could and what happens will reflect bad on the neocons that got us in this mess. No respect for GWB, and Eff Cheney the heartless fool. History won’t forget.
I never understood why the massive embassy had to be built but of course it had to because of the oil.
To the rooftop!!!
What is vague about this?
And separately, three U.S. officials said the White House was considering sending a contingent of special forces soldiers to Iraq. Their limited mission — which has not yet been approved — would focus on training and advising beleaguered Iraqi troops, many of whom have fled their posts across the nation’s north and west
the fact of the matter is that this embassy is there and there are americans there. obama did not build this place but americans come first. I just hope he is getting them out of there like some one posted earlier… He wouldn’t tell republicans if he was, because they would only obstruct such a movement. Its easy to just say this is a mistake but would it be a mistake if your kid or other family member were there?
Seriously, that “training and advising” blarney has been used to cover a very great many activities over the decades. I’m not necessarily against that, just noting that it doesn’t say much.
in order to quell the brutal fighting in Iraq before it morphs into outright war
Uh…the only reason not to consider it “outright war” now is that the Iraqi government side is hardly fighting back.
For some of us, we do not see the hilarity in your post. A grim time
for all concerned, hardly a matter for levity then or now.
PROMISE!!!
Please let it be so!
Totally disrespectful and has no bearing on what’s happening today. What a stupid effing little prick the person that posted this is…
Firing off an email to the TPM adults now…
Yeah right, ClarenceVine/Darcy.
Wow. I may have to re-think my atheism and entertain the notion that there is a god.
Maybe you are confused about what Army Special Forces troops do. They are not anything like John Waynes iron balls movie “The Green Berets”.
Special Forces troops serve to train and advise as well as build cohesion within a community.
Forget what you thought you knew of them from the “Green Beret” sagas of days gone by. And do not confuse them with Delta or Rangers.
They are not a destabilizing force, that’s nothing near their mission when deployed.
Why do this? Why have our troops on the ground at an impending battle between ISIS and various Shiite forces? Obama wants to “do something” but this is high risk with no upside.
So there should be no “IRAQGHAZI”.
The valid alternative to taking vague official statements at face value is NOT “make shit up out of thin air”.
the morningbro crew is ‘reluctantly’ in support of u.s. rushing in to save the oil… er, iraq from falling to the terrorists who will then destroy our beloved homeland.
oh, and bill kristol doesn’t think this is the time for recriminations about how deadly wrong he and his neocon pals were. it’s so accommodating of msnbc to daily give voice to these fucking scumbags.
it also appears meeka was given note – she was her typical silent self until the end when she said the ‘debate’ reminds her of the family dinner table where her brother who worked for bush argues with her brother who worked for obama… because, you know, it’s all about her.
In Benjhazi, Obama was accused by the right that they did not support the Embassy staff in Benghazi, by not sending the military, now Obama is sending the military to protect the Iraq Embassy and the left is attacking Obama as he is reengaging into the Iraqi war. I find that amazing that Obama is dammed if he does not protect an embassy and dammed if he does protect an embassy.
I have about a quadzillion more faith in Obama’s move and motivations than anything that comes from the neocon/teabaggers.
I wouldn’t want the job of cleaning up the Bush/Cheney messes but I believe that Obama has done pretty damn well, considering everything that was intentionally dumped onto Bush’s successor and what the Bush goons intentionally f-up ever since.
There is no pretty way out or great solution at this point. We just gotta get uninvolved and quick.
