RIP, Scout
I haven’t read Go Set A Watchman yet, but truly To Kill A Mockingbird is one of the best books in the American library. I didn’t appreciate it in high school (who appreciates the books they are required to read in high school really), but I read it again after college and was blown away by how good it was. I know that it affected me, as it has affected millions others. I hope that people continue to recognize her contirbution, not just to literature, but to American society. President Obama is correct. Harper Lee truly did change us for the better.
A beautiful and moving tribute. What more could one hope for in terms of a legacy?
Damn you, President Obama. I’m getting ready to go out to dinner and you just made me smear my mascara. So proud to have a leader of our nation who just seems to get it on so many levels.
Umberto Eco died, too, today. For those who have read him.
I have a friend who grew up in Monroeville AL where Nelle Harper Lee and her siblings lived. Her sister Alice was my friend’s family’s attorney. A staging of TKAM is done every year at the courthouse there where the courthouse scene was filmed
Fascinating! What did the locals think of Truman Capote?
Honestly, I don’t know, but my friend who now lives in New Orleans is so very proud of Monroeville because of “Nelle” and travels back to Monroeville and meets up with cousins to attend the performance every year. Anyone can go but it’s a hotter ticket than Hamilton on Broadway. She also feels a special affinity to Capote because of the NOLA and Monroeville connections.

She TRIED to change America, but didn’t. We still have the same stupid racial problems…
And so have you Mr.President - for the better despite what the asshole GOPers say,
Isn’t that the truth. He is such a great and decent man. It just makes me ill how disrespected he is in this country. Fucking assholes
