Discussion: Obama On Garland: 'Yeah, He's A White Guy' But He's A Great Jurist

What you wish for and what is possible are not necessarily one in the same.

You’re not thinking of the Senate or the House are you because they’re too dysfunctional for a guy who wants to get things done. Down the road I can see HRC nominating him for SCOTUS after Michelle has had her life back long enough.

I rarely say this about another man, but…

I really, really love this guy.
He’s really set the standard for how a President of the United States of America should conduct himself (or herself!).

Even if allowed, I doubt that Michelle and the girls, much less PBO, would want to sign up for that. I imagine they’re all looking forward to some down time - well deserved at that.

You could always write him in, but I would only do that if you live in a non-competitive state

Irasdad, normally you are not just witty but profound, a rare combination I’ve complimented you on before. But here you miss the mark.
Yes, “Chief Justice Obama” does have a nice ring to it but it would be a horrible precedent to set for former presidents to gravitate to SCOTUS. It’s never happened, nor should it. Yes, Obama is a gifted constitutional scholar, but presidents are politicians, and justices should never be, ever. Can you imagine a Dubya on the Supreme Court? A Trump or a Cruz? Heaven help us. Remember the old saw, what goes around comes around. No, no and no.
I’m confident Obama will do many good things in his later years but not on SCOTUS. He is a wise, judicious man whose heart is in the right place and whose character is the very embodiment of Hemingway’s famous definition of courage: “grace under pressure.”
He will continue to bind up the nation’s wounds, of that I have no doubt. How, I don’t know. What I am sure of is that he will find a way. And I think that after all he’s been through for us, for all Americans, not just Democrats, we owe him the freedom to choose. Let him find his way. He has until now, he will in the future.
But like you, damn, how I’m going to miss him. As will his clueless detractors. We won’t see his likes again in my lifetime, that’s for sure.

Out of the thought of such a good man sitting on the SCOTUS, I happily clicked “Yay!” to irasdad’s suggestion–because it really would be awesome–but you’re right: It would an awful precedent to set. (((Shivers))) – Just the thought of a Justice ‘Dubya.’ Ugh!!

he’s a white guy, but

A Green Grape in the Sun…

In a round about way yes, by getting people of similar temperment, intelligence and open mindedness elected to your local government so our national gov’t is filled with people like him a generation from now.

It’s not unprecedented, but has only happened once. Harding appointed former President Taft Chief Justice in 1921. He served 9 years until his death in 1930.

And fortunately for this country, Obama is preparing and inspiring a new generation of leadership.

Technically, the 22nd amendment says, “No person shall be elected to the office of the President more than twice”, so he could run as VP and then the elected President could resign. Just to be clear, I’m not proposing that as a reasonable scenario, but the law wouldn’t forbid it,.

Absolutely correct Randy, as usual. I LOVE MY PRESIDENT NOW AND FOREVER
