Discussion: Obama Mocks 'Conspiracy' That He's Coming For Your Guns

Its not hard to tell that the NRA is afraid of Obama - instead of officially attending the debate, they softly whined in the background like a broken space heater. That’s something that Obama should highlight! No offense intended my American brethren, but you guys really like your (very public) moral conflict haha - and for once, this is a conflict worth having.

The NRA can’t take the heat from a town hall crowd that is not filled with unquestioning supporters.

No, the supreme court has ruled on this language. It refers to the “people”. That means citizens, not just a national guard. It was Obama who pushed the supreme court to rule on this issue. It was the outcome he wanted. An individual right to own a weapon. He also used this to reverse laws in Washington DC, New York, Chicago and federal parks which prevented gun ownership.

They’d fall short because they’d run out of snacks first. They’d get taken down at the local 7-11.

Why does the language of the 2nd Amendment torture us as it does? Former Justice John Paul Stevens, in retirement, seeks to modify the language of the 2nd to read as follows:

“A well regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms when serving in the Militia shall not be infringed.” The italics are the change.

There is a case for self defense in one’s own home, using short barreled firearms. Sawed-off shotguns were outlawed in 1939, however, because they served no useful purpose in a well-regulated militia, according to US v Miller.

In Dodge City and other western frontier towns of the 1800’s, people checked their guns at the local sheriff’s office upon arrival. They were given a cash deposit for their weapons. Open carry and concealed carry were not an option in the Wild West of yesterday.

Only in modern America can we see wannabe para-military idiots stalking Muslims with a high powered rifle on a public sidewalk.

I saw a bumper sticker yesterday that made me shiver. It read, “God Bless our Troops. Especially our Snipers.” It made me think that we obviously have a long way to go in this struggle.

The NRA ad regarding get a free pocketknife if you join is amusing.

Yea I love the “can’t stop it, so do nothing” mentality…

If that is the case:
No cars, accidents and death happen,
No planes, accidents and death happen,
No buses, accidents and death happen,
No sidewalks, accidents and death happen,
No bathtubs, accidents and death happen,
No staircases, accidents and death happen,
No sex, accidents and death happen during childbirth,
No…

I always wondered what the weapons of the future would look like, and where the breaking point might be in what would constitute an acceptable citizen-owned and carried around town armament might be. Imagine a hypothetical concealable laser, designed for war. Infinitely accurate, un-traceable, and completely silent. Something that could liquify the brain of an adversary at a 5+ mile range with no leftover projectile to conduct forensics. I wonder if the Founding Fathers would have been cool with something like that in the hands of a mentally ill person the way the NRA is fine with unstable people owning assault rifles in modern times.

Just FYI a universal background check wouldn’t actually make it noticeably harder to get a gun compared to situations that don’t require a check. (Waiting periods and training requirements are a different story.) The background check is just a query about your legal status that goes into computerized records via an automated system and takes maybe a minute or so. You have more hoops to jump through when you rent a car or adopt a puppy. In just about any gun store in the land, you’re out the door with your new toy in about five minutes.

Obama’s take on conspiracies was spot on. His bit about Jade Helm and how some people were looking to defend themselves from the US Army was perfect. He could have expounded on it and bring up the bit about tunnels under abandoned Walmart’s but he didn’t. Rather, he stayed on point. A very classy guy whom I’m glad is in the Oval Office.

I found that the case when I wanted to exchange a 9mm pistol I found to be seriously unsafe for a different make. The background check was far less than the effort to renew my drivers license when I turned 65. Btw, I really liked the priest’s idea of titling guns the way cars are titled.

NRA spokesman Andrew Arulanandam said beforehand that the group saw "no reason to participate in a public relations spectacle orchestrated by the White House.

Wow. Just wow.

NRA pushed back on Twitter in real time, noting at one point "none of the president’s orders would have stopped any of the recent mass shootings.

Yeah, because it is executive power, it has serious limits, and it should. So because congress does nothing he can’t try to do some common sense things to help our gun problems?

This group is deranged. How is it that the millions of NRA members buy into this shit? Do they not have voting rights to vote out their leaders?

At the end of the day, it all comes back to money in politics. No real change can happen without changing that first.

I recorded the Town Hall and watched most of it last night. Unlike the NRA claims, it wasn’t a one sided ‘spectacle.’ They proved themselves to be the cowards they are.

You are great as always Mr. President!

However, I think you missed a golden opportunity here. When the women who had been raped made her comment that she now had to have a gun, you should have asked her how her having to pass a background check would deny her owning one.

Unless of course she can’t pass a background check. Then maybe for protection she should pick up some pepper spray instead.

Indeed. If you can’t make your own argument in a forum such as this, then your argument - and you- lack integrity.

I just thought people who’d never bought one should know how easy it is to get a gun. The check doesn’t make it harder, but it does stop wrong-os from buying new guns—I’ve seen it happen. Only common sense it should be universal but common sense does not govern these particular discussions.

There are 300 million people in this country.
There are an estimated 300 million guns in this country.
Yet most American households do not own a gun.

That’s because most guns are owned by people who own more than one. Despite this, every time the President says anything about guns at all, the Right screams that “Obama is coming to take your guns!!!”

What happens next? The people who already own more than one gun go buy even more of them.

Yet when these individuals look in the mirror each morning, they do not see the reflection of a sucker.

How odd.

I’ve been bugging my reps. for exactly that. Universal checks. and other easily implemented stuff. My rep Martha McSally to her credit has introduced a bill to keep guns away from mental cases. It likely won’t go anywhere. But she tried.

But then again, their government representatives weren’t all bought and paid for nra whores!
