Discussion: NYT: Vatican Confirms Pope Met With Kim Davis

More proof that we need a REAL and profound separation of church and state! The Founding Fathers never would stand for this - they of course escaped religious control in Europe by the corrupt churches.

Ummā€¦snark? I bit hard to tell on this one.

The founding fathers would have never stood for what exactly?

Proof again that religion and politics donā€™t mix. Shame on the Pope.

Maybe Davisā€™ lawyers snookered the Vatican?

If the meeting took place, and, she took pictures, I suspect weā€™ll see them soon enough.

Speculation on my part, but would seem the meeting was ā€œsecretā€ with some ground rules on both sides and now the Davis side has skirted the ground rules and are going public for political purposes. Disappointing if the Pope met with her and the Vatican PR folks are probably wringing their hands now.

UH? What the heck?

Never have stood for what? A US citizen meeting with a prominent religious figure?

Well, that was stupid of the Pope. Lost a bit of respect for himā€¦

Again, the woman has a right to her views. She does NOT have the right to take taxpayer money for a job she refuses to do.

Come on Pope!

They say burying one of your own children is maybe the most painful, tragic act a person could ever endure. If it stopped them from giving you grandchildren it would probably assuage the pain.

The Pope can meet with anyone he wants to. Not being a member of the Pope Francis Marching and Chowder Society, I am not disappointed in the Pope, but simply take note that, as a man who does not represent me, and to whom I have no allegiance, there are issues where I agree with him and many where I donā€™t. Whether Davis was invited by the Popeā€™s minders, or she was inveigled into his presence by some collaboration between her lawyers and highly placed conservative churchmen, I think this meeting was a political mistake. Itā€™s divisive and will result in a retraction of some amount of goodwill that was afforded to the Pope by those of us on the left. But that too was the Popeā€™s choice to make.

If it comes out that he DID invite her, then itā€™s troubling that he would chose to elevate this creature over others far more deserving of the Churchā€™s succor.

Chacon a son gout.

Francis: You are not the pope of me, or my country.

Letā€™s see. Pope Francis leads an organization that is opposed to artificial birth control, abortion even in the case of rape, discriminates against women, has covered up abuse against children and because he has spoken kindly of poor people and wrote about climate change (heā€™s against it) people in this country and on this board have given him rock star treatment. In reality he is an old Catholic cleric who has come up through the system and knows how to work it. Iā€™m sure he is a nice man and means everything he says but the idea that he is some kind of new age hero is silly.

Ouch. Okay, not snark.

I saw the Pope met with prisoners. Is that where this Kim Davis meeting took place?

Lombardi: ā€œI do not deny the meeting took place. . .ā€

The pope meets with an awful lot of people. Probably not smart to assume a meeting equals approval of her behavior. He met with some prisoners in Philly, pretty sure he doesnā€™t condone the behavior that got them there.

Iā€™m missing the part where the Vatican confirmed the meeting. And how could Davis have left Kentucky without everyone knowing about it?

Oh, cā€™mon. If no one under the age of 30 ever got within 100 feet of you, ever again, would your life be anything but enhanced? If one of the 50 states was converted to an oasis where residency required citizens to be 18 or older theyā€™d have to guard the borders for lack of land and housing to accommodate those trying to move there.

Lots of folks were also fooled by John Paul II on his US visits back in the day.

I recall drool-a-thons similar to this latest spectacle.

Why have people been assuming this Pope is open minded? Behind the PR happy face he is what is ā€“ the leader of the Catholic Church. He still upholds all their rigid doctrines. Of course he met with Kim Davis ā€“ there is nothing she is doing that is out of line with what the Pope believes also. Did he also meet with anti-abortion activists? Would that surprise anyone? We mocked the right for denigrating the Pope for his words about capitalism and global warming ā€“ and now we have our chance to hate him also.
