Discussion: NYT Editorial Board: Clinton Should Cut Ties With Foundation Now

Does the NYTimes understand that she’s never had anything to do with the running of the foundation? Good god.

AT&T is one of the very biggest donors to America’s Promise, and for much of the Bush administration, Colin and Alma’s son Michael was chair of the Federal Communications Commission, which, among other things, regulates AT&T. I never saw anyone write a story investigating whether AT&T’s donations improperly influenced Powell’s pro-telecom regulatory stances. But it’s genuinely unimaginable that if Powell had chosen not to help AT&T with regulatory matters the press would have blasted him as a hypocrite. That would have been ridiculous.

Nobody is noticing the 4 billion pound gorilla in the room. What if Trump became president, would he cut all ties with his business ventures? Put everything in a blind trust? Sell it all?

An active president cannot have his personal business affairs influencing his national responsibilities. This is a major Trump weakness that Democrats should seize upon and hammer on it constantly.

"Please cut ties with the Foundation. We’ll still continue to link you with it, anyway, though. Meanwhile, please ignore this:Clinton and Powell Foundations treated very differently by the media"

She’s not involved with the foundation. Period. Never has been except for the fact that it’s her husband’s foundation.

And Bill and Chelsea shouldn’t be forced out either. Fuck it. The foundation does great work, has an A rating…

Agree on the Trump foundation thing - but of course those foundations don’t actually do anything to help anyone.

If I could like this multiple times, I would.

Your comment is right on but she should just do it. Of course, it isn’t fair, but I think HRC and Bill have become more than accustomed to that by now. HRC knew that she would (fairly or unfairly) have to give up a lot to become POTUS. She can do more to advance the causes she cares about in that role than as a member of the board of a charity.

Mother Jones has written three articles about that…

Here are articles by NPR, CNN and Bloomberg. Now the eldest children (led by Ivanka) would likely run the blind, but that’s potentially an issue on account of would he use them to covertly still run things.

Yeah I’m looking around and I found this interesting article from the Congressional Research Service:

The trust is considered “blind” because eventually, through the sale of transferred assets and the purchase of new ones, the public officer will be shielded from knowledge of the identity of the specific assets in the trust. Without such knowledge, conflict of interest issues would be avoided because no particular asset in the trust could act as an influence upon the official duties that the officer performs for the Government.

So that looks like a Trump blind trust would have to sell all Trump’s properties and buy different assets that he does not know about. How do you think Trump would like that?

I just dont get his bs…The clintons have a foundation that actually help people across the world and the media is trying to make it issue. Yet we all know trump is hiding something in this taxes and people have been calling for him to release them he says nope everyone is like, ok next question. So someone decide to make the clinton foundation an issue now hillary must cut ties with it and nothing wrong has even been done. This damn double standard is getting on my nerves. I guess we are going to keep hearing questions about this from now till election day just like those damn emails

Exactly. She resigned from the board when she began her presidential run (~May 2015), and she was not on it when she was SoS. Not to mention that the only countries they have accepted donations from since she began the run are Canada, UK, Australia, and 3 European countries. So basically, all the bitching about cutting ties with those scary foreign countries amounts to bitching about our closest allies, including the other 3 countries with English mother-tongue. That nobody can be bothered to point this out is pure malpractice.

If you don’t like the Times, don’t read it, but it’s a good newspaper.

Including every single one with foreign interests.

Unless I have foundation, she joined the board after finishing her run as SoS. Then she resigned from the board in May 2015 when she began her run for president. At some point in there, it was changed from the Clinton Foundation to include all three of their names.

The Clinton Foundation (founded in 1997 as the William J. Clinton Foundation,[4] and called beginning in 2013 the Bill, Hillary & Chelsea Clinton Foundation[5]) is a nonprofit corporation under section 501©(3) of the U.S. tax code.
