Discussion: NYT Columnist: Yale Police Stopped My Son At Gunpoint

Discussion for article #232480

Hmm. Charles Blow’s son is stopped at gunpoint, while fellow columnist David Brooks’ son is working for the IDF, while they stop Palestinians at gunpoint. The former has a son who never, it seems, will be viewed as a first class American because of the amount of melanin in his skin, whereas the the latter son will always be a first class American, at least in part because of his wealth, even if he works for the military of a foreign government. I guess the Times does have a wide range of perspective in their opinion pages, after all.

Especially regarding collective punishment.

In far too many places in “Amur’ca” it is a crime to be “walking while black” and it is punishable by summary execution by a panicky, poorly trained, poorly informed, and heavily armed police officer.
After all, if he was REALLY a black college student, why wasn’t he exiting the basketball facility? FOX Viewers don’t want to know.

No. In Murka it’s a crime to be EXISTING while black and for that they can be legally killed by using any excuse whatsoever, if you’re white.

It was old in 1967 and it’s a lot worse now.

I wonder if the Secret Service details for the Obamas all have to include at least one white agent to avoid this kind of harassment by peckerwoods in blue.

This guy is an example of why blacks are considered racial whiners. White people are constantly stopped by police if they fit a description of a suspect. often guns are pulled on the white people. This is standard police procedure to stop and question people never a crime scene especially if the person matches the description of a suspect. Guess what white people never claim discrimination unless there really is discrimination. This anti-white discrimination is never reported despite FBI stat showing anti-white discrimination to occur. A number of whites have won lawsuits against universities etc because they refuse to hire a qualified white person and instead hired an unqualified black to have a token.

They’ll be conducting an internal investigation? Well, all problems will be solved!

You hate the Zionist Entity. Got it.

At least the kid didn’t offend the sensibilities or superiority complexes of those cops. He’d be dead if he did. Law breaking smaw breaking. It’s the Cop’s feelings…delicate they are… you offend to get killed.

Can we stop with the tired “murica” thing? It’s America…it’s a wonderful place and it needs no insult.

Brown skin is a ticket to die violently in America no matter what class you are. Sucks for Chuck but considering all the millions of African Americans getting fucked over in worse ways daily who will never have the prospects of Chuck’s offspring or get a opinion piece in the Times about their struggle, I don’t care that much.

Nah man. It’s too easy for simpletons to disparage Southerners/Poor rural whites as if they are all racists and the only racists in this country. They think their version of not dealing with reality is better than people programmed by Fox News.

?

I dunno. Kinda thought that the experiences of two different NYT columnists’ kids was interesting, especially in the way that those experiences seem to inform the opinions of their fathers.

Edit: Looked it up, and apparently ¨Zionist entity¨ is a term of contempt for Israel. I do hate collective punishment, and apartheid, and ethnic cleansing, etc. If the Israeli government stops doing those things tomorrow, I’d be no more critical of them than I was, say, of Canada.

Hey dfrombham hate to break it to you but… you’re kinda racial whining right there. Or is it only whining when people who aren’t white complain about racial issues?

Try harder. You can do it. Maybe next time you write a paragraph you could burn a popsicle stick cross in your bathroom sink for inspiration.
Peace out homie

So you aren’t going to address the real issues then?

Namely that the police don’t have the right to inform someone if they are detained or free to go?
That the police did in fact act properly in this case?

Far more unarmed whites without criminal records are killed by police then unarmed black people who were either committing a crime or had a criminal record.

You just made that up, didn’t you?

Not its quite real. Unarmed whites killed by cops aren’t reported by the media.
Nor were studies showing white cops were less likely to kill unarmed blacks then black civilians would or black cops.

"With the turmoil in Ferguson (MO) the latest example, activists and many reporters would have us believe that police officers are prejudicially “trigger happy” when dealing with black suspects.

But a scientific study from Washington State University-Spokane suggests just the opposite. In truth, according to findings from the research team’s innovative experiments:

• Officers were less likely to erroneously shoot unarmed black suspects than they were unarmed whites — 25 times less likely, in fact
• And officers hesitated significantly longer before shooting armed suspects who were black, compared to armed subjects who were white or Hispanic"

“In sum,” writes Dr. Lois James, a research assistant professor with the university’s Department of Criminal Justice and Criminology who headed the study, “this research found that participants displayed significant bias favoring Black suspects” in their shooting decisions.

We are black PEOPLE, not blacks. Black. People. If you can type the phrase “white people”, then you can type “black people” too.

But we’re not talking about shootings. We’re talking about discrimination. We’re talking about the simple truth that a police officer is more likely to stop a black person than a white person for the same offense. I understand that the suspect description was a match to what young Mr. Blow was wearing, that is understood. What is NOT understood is the drawing of a weapon as an introduction. A simple “Excuse me, mind if I see your identification? There’s been a possible robbery and you seem to match the description” would have been a far better way to make one’s presence known.

I’m sorry, but the article doesn’t match your preconceived narrative. If you bothered to read the WHOLE article, you would have seen that Mr. Blow specifically said that he did NOT have a problem with the fact that his son was stopped. "In his op-ed, Blow wrote that he wasn’t angry about the fact that his son was questioned because he fit the description of a robbery suspect. Instead, he took issue with the way the stop was carried out. “Why was a gun drawn first? Why was he not immediately told why he was being detained? Why not ask for ID first?” he wrote. “What if my son had panicked under the stress, having never had a gun pointed at him before, and made what the officer considered a ‘suspicious’ movement?”

Of course white people are stopped all the time if they closely match a description of the suspect. But, law enforcement almost never pulls their gun as a first response when they stop a white individual. And, you virtually never hear of the detainment of an innocent white person ending with the shooting of that person. It happens so often when innocent black individuals are stopped that, though those of good heart are shocked and outraged that it happened, we are not surprised.

By all means post links to stories by credible news organizations (small town newspapers are okay; right wing blogs are not) of law enforcement officers shooting white individuals who pick up a toy gun in a store.
