Discussion: NYT: Campaign Tying Roy Moore To 'Dry Alabama' Social Media Was Run By Dems

told the Times that he hopes one day the use of fake social media accounts in politics will be forbidden, but until then, Democrats have to keep up with Republicans who, he believes, are employing the same tactics.

“If you don’t do it, you’re fighting with one hand tied behind your back,” Osborne told the Times. “You have a moral imperative to do this — to do whatever it takes.”

I hope so, too, but until then, no no no. The Dems cannot become spewers of propaganda like the GOP. It’s disgusting and anti-democratic and cedes the moral high ground; already, the right is moaning about this, and unfortunately we can’t call it a lie.

I just have to say, I probably was not the target audience, and I’m barely on social media (and not Facebook), but nobody in Alabama that I had contact with said one word about Moore and alcohol. The number of people influenced may have been in the tens–maybe the hundreds. That’s optimistic.

What mattered for the vast majority was his predatory behavior years ago with underage girls, and just the vast embarrassment of the man himself–twice removed from the Alabama Supreme Court, being allegedly banned from the Gadsden Mall, and his right-wing nuttery that makes the state look terrible.

There was outside money in the race–I got the flyers from “Highway 31” (which runs through the state) with the quotes from Republicans, including Ivanka, about “a special place in hell,” etc. Those had an impact. “Dry Alabama”? Nope.

So why is the NYT digging all of this up now? Are they going going to autopsy every special election? Of even the close ones? Are they digging into the NC 9th, because in this district there seems to have been hanky panky during the primary? Isn’t this the second story about the Moore/Jones election?

Totally agree. If ‘everybody does it’ it normalizes what should be aberrant behavior.

Politics is a contact sport and people vote for two reasons- for a candidate or against a candidate. Sometimes it’s both.

As long as the republicans are the masters of dirty politics, you cannot reasonably expect Democratic Operatives to disarm.

By past “couple of years” you mean 50? :frowning:

I am not certain that Moore losing really hurt the GOP in any way. I do believe that McConnell is happy with the current Senate majority sans Moore. I have a feeling that Moore would have been an embarrassment to Majority Leader and his happy cohorts.

You’re right.

But, it feels like we have lost even more intensely over the past couple of years, probably because the contrast between Obama and Individual-1 is much more stark that other Dem -> GOP transitions.

Can we all just agree that AL politics are f-ed-up? Judge Pedo, Gov. Creepy, AG Blackmail, now this.

Congratulations, SC, you’re no longer the scummiest state in the USA!

Here’s a great scene from MISSISSIPPI BURNING where Gene Hackman explains that when fighting gutter rats, maybe the place to be IS the gutter. Same with the GOP. They’re worthless, soulless brutes who would burn down a kindergarten if it meant tax cuts for billionaires. I say we get in the gutter and kick the living shit out of the republican gutter rats:

Isn’t this just reflective of Roy Moore’s actual position? He is a child molester and he likely believes Alabama should be dry. What’s the problem?

I didn’t like that when I saw it in the theater when the film was first released, and I still don’t like it.

Fuck these people. We are fighting for our democracy. When they ratfuck us, ratfuck them 3 times. Tired of losing? Let’s fight.

Define fighting in the gutter. Some people feel AOC calling Trump racist is fighting in the gutter. Personally I’m fine with going in that gutter, because it is the truth. This type of gutter where we lie about Republicans however is stupid, why waste money on lies about Moore wanting to turn the state dry, when you could spend it spreading the truth about his inappropriate behavior with underage teens?

Because double standards

Wow. What a Machiavellian web we weave.
Hypocrisy and Expediency versus Morality.
Fighting fire with fire is the former.

Now THAT takes me back!

I recall that argument used to excuse torture of Islamic prisoners.

Wait a minute…some clever liberals and Democrats cooked up a website that trolled Roy More and then, remarkably, an Alabamian Christian voter-group (pro-Moore) that advocates for prohibition…ran with it to make an even bigger issue of Alabamians getting drunk which would hurt, presumably, either candidate?
I first saw MADA (Make Alabama Drunk Again) on fb. I had my suspicions…if it’s this easy to troll Republicans, in Alabama, why stop there?

Lot’s of NYT ink on this rather amusing story. Lot’s of ink trying to make an equivalency pitch between trump campaign conspiracies and the democrats having some troll laughs on fb…at Roy Moore’s expense.
Why do I get the feeling that the NYT has a creepy agenda. WaPo also…
