Krugman, re Butina Jet Fuel caper.

It may be nothing more than this; IOW garden variety scamming, but I’m betting there’s some ‘dirty laundry’ here.

ETA. Josh makes much the same point and adds that the Russians are drawn to corrupt people because they are more easily drawn into subversion.

Butina’s lawyer told the Times the deal was “just further evidence that she wasn’t here on any mission on behalf of the Russian Federation. She was essentially operating on her own account.”

Laughable. As a lowly “grad student,” she would not have the kind of pull to even think about doing this. Only an agent of the Russian government could.

Let us also not forget that she had an ample cash account to draw from. :moneybag: How do you suppose she got that? :smirk:

That song was playing as my sweet little girlfriend drove me to the airport on the way to Fort Dix and then Viet Nam. “Don’t know when I’ll be back again” or if for that matter. When I came home Jeremiah Was a Bullfrog was number one and that sweet little girl was taken by it since she was still just 17 while I was 19 going on thirty seven. Pop culture made me sick and the quest for something heavier began.

Hey - calling all former grad students on this board - who among you in your halcyon student days did not handle thousands of dollars in transactions involving foreign banks and american ‘educational’ organizations.
Who among you were not keyed into 3rd tier political players with access to legislative influence?
Oh ye doubters and slanderers - for shame. tsk tsk.

You are so cynical - haven’t you read her dissertation:

The politics of gender-related influence and age-disparate social interactions and intersectional money-laundering.

As someone who spent a large portion of his life living from paycheck to paycheck, the naked greed and the hand rubbing and back-slapping over potential deals and easy money always leaves me feeling sad and bewildered. I have many friends and family members who are overly impressed by wealth (or frequently, just the appearance of wealth). Trump epitomizes this shallow mindless crap when he rants about why the media does not call him elite. The proliferation of pyramid schemes in the local community is symptomatic of the “greed is good” culture

Trump isn’t just destroying our image in the world, he is revealing the fact that we have not deserved to be admired for our principles for a long, long time. Shit didn’t start with Trump and it ain’t going away when he leaves.

Actually, I’ve heard rumors that Butina was a former Covfefe trader from Nambia.
