“She said that she and her boyfriends want to respect town residents’ request”
BoyfriendS?? I admit I haven’t been following her story very closely. Did I miss the part about her being a swinger? In any case it’s nice to hear that all of them have such respect for the town residents.
Hey Kaci, a lot of us sane, level headed average people agree with you too. I want to thank you personally to help make Christie look like the fool, political opportunist, and just plain shameless bully that he is. You go girl!
Here’s a headline alternative: “Nurse apologizes to neighbors for political firestorm.” A hell of a lot more accurate than the implication that she was self-quarantining.
She has one boyfriend and they live together. That was what we call a typo.
My guess is that she got a few Ebola Kaci hate-mails & phone calls, and wisely conducted some damage-control p.r. More importantly, she needs to pick another color for her eyebrows. Bluish gray doesn’t serve her well.
I wish you hadn’t pointed that out. Now it’s all I can see when I look at her picture.
“…especially when up against governors, you don’t always have an option…”
Chris Christie is no governor.
“She did maintain, however, that New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie was wrong to quarantine her as soon as she arrived in the U.S.”
From the State:
"Given the unfounded panic over Ebola in the United States, it’s likely that Gov. Christie will score political points by taking the world’s toughest stance, and vowing to knock down anyone who stands in his way.
“The American public believes this is common sense and we’re not moving an inch,” he said during a campaign swing through Florida. “Our policy hasn’t changed and our policy will not change.”
This vow came shortly after a major policy change. And my guess is more changes are on the way, because the state’s rickety policy is still taking shape. It’s an improvisation that will move with the political winds.
The first policy was indeed tough. It mandated that any traveler from the heart of the epidemic in Africa who was exposed to Ebola patients would face a mandatory quarantine for three weeks, for those who don’t live nearby that meant a visit to a plastic bubble constructed at University Hospital in Newark, like it or not.
“I don’t believe when you’re dealing with something as serious as this that we can count on a voluntary system,” the governor said.
Hickox’s boyfriend seemed to know exactly what the governor was in for. “Now he’s messed with the wrong red-head,” he said.
But the first and only occupant of the bubble, a nurse returning from the front lines, was released after a few days and sent home to Maine, where a court found there was no rational justification for a mandatory quarantine. Maybe the judge didn’t fully appreciate the significance of the polls."

A few? Have you been to any websites that use, say, Discus or Facebook? The woman has been subjected to a hurricane force shitstorm of fear-crazed right wing hysteria whipped up by the college dropouts and hateful spokesmodels at Fear News. I daresay she’s been subjected to a barrage of death threats and hate mail the likes of which we haven’t seen directed toward someone unwillingly thrust into the public eye since McCarthy died.
This is what Ebola shaming looks like. Next they’ll shift to slut shaming because she has a. . . gasp!! boyfriend and probably practices birth control
It looks like she has tattooed eyebrows. Weird.
I find it hilarious that during the H1N1 outbreak, the right wing meme was that it was all a hoax and an excuse for Obama to force people into FEMA camps. Now they are screaming for Ebola camps. Disease is inherently scary, and it lends itself to finding scapegoats. Ebola is not the last frightening disease that will reach our shores. I consider this woman an absolute heroine, first for going to West Africa, and then for fighting at home that quarantine policy (which is a scary executive power) be based solely on the best available scientific evidence, and never as a knee-jerk response to public panic.
This WaPo headline from October 27 endures
Kaci Hickox 1, Chris Christie 0
Just wait until her three girlfriends weigh in on this…
Boo hiss. She might not have been hairy in the brow.
and in this age of blogs, fixing typos seems to be a forgotten art
Until then, however, let’s make lots and lots of fun of her eye makeup because that doesn’t in any way trivialize her or the story. That’s a great way to segue into the slut shaming.
I have respect for someone who respects the will of the people in her community but can tell a Republican governor who is acting irrationally for political purposes to F*** off.
“The woman has been subjected to a hurricane force shitstorm of fear-crazed right wing hysteria…”
In other words, Republican’s Funding Fathers disagree with her.
