Oh, and not that this insanity is even worth considering, but. Number of airports in the US (counts everything with a paved runway): about 5000. Number of public schools in the US: about 100,000. I’m sure the NRA would be willing to fund the program themselves.
What about taking away the right to live of those law-abiding students who are simply in class or the cafeteria or the library or the hallway when school shootings regularly happen?
And, if you’re basically going to make all public spaces war zones - because, can’t limit guns - how about using some Department of Defense money for all the fortifications you advocate? Betsy DeVos sure isn’t going to use education money for it.
In order to protect gun manufacturers and to avoid dealing with mental health issues we have long ignored, Americans have to give up their freedom to come and go. To preserve freedom Americans have to live in a prison world. Thanks for your insight.
By the way, I have decided not to refer to Ollie’s organization as the NRA any more. It is really the Gun Manufacturers lobby. Most NRA members are in favor of sensible regulations, but the gun manufacturers say no. The manufacturers control the NRA totally and it is impossible for anyone not supporting the far right agenda to secure a seat on their board.
It’s telling that Ole Grandpa Ollie is the best the gun culture can come up with; a decrepit old coot whose claim to fame is being a convicted felon that got off on a technicality. What this goofball doesn’t realize is that the Gun culture is the culture of violence that these kids grow up in. He’s the one that teaches them that “the gun is the answer.”.
“Many of these young boys have been on Ritalin since they were in kindergarten,” he added.
Yep it’s right on the side effects label
warning might cause a mass shooting
Give it time. Eventually these geniuses will get the idea that the only way to stop school shootings is to shut down all schools. And it will give them more tax cuts! A win-win in republican eyes.
I agree in principle that this is a sickness in late 20th and 21st century culture. There are myriad causes for which there is no magic, all-encompassing solution, and there is that pesky 1st amendment that makes pre-empting these kinds of outrages difficult, if not impossible. You can’t lock people up for coveting lethal weaponry or admiring Nazis or other violent groups. Making guns more difficult to obtain is the one obvious and concrete measure society could take that could prevent at least some of these shooters from being able carrying out their rampages. But I suppose we’re going to have to refrain from inconveniencing “lawful gun owners” indefinitely even so…
It’s circular logic at its best. It takes a 2nd Amendment purist/apologist to miss the point that unfettered worship of the 2nd Amendment is a major contributor to the disease he calls a culture of violence.
Is the NRA gonna pay for metal detectors, trained personnel to run and maintain them, and the extra hours the school will need to be open to run this school prison system?
No, a lot of them are not on Ritalin. Son and his wife are elementary special ed teachers. My grandson was placed on meds for ADD after my son spent 3 years trying everything else. After a few years he was weaned off them. He is much better now. Many parents are reluctant to put their kids on meds. Parents, teachers, school psychologist, counselors all meet to discuss appropriate treatment before a child is placed on meds. Wasn’t it Scientology that was upset about all the medication children were on?
“Many of these young boys have been on Ritalin since they were in kindergarten,” he added.
My son has been on medication for ADHD since kindergarten. We’ve never had a gun in our house, nor with one exception, have our friends and relatives. Our son has never been interested in guns, because they kill people and he’s not interested in doing that. Strange how his medication didn’t lead to an interest in killing people.
