Discussion: NOTES:Talking To Minority Voters

Exactly. The Republican’s problem with Trump is exactly that. He is NOT “dog whistling”! He is saying loudly, in plain simple English exactly what the Republicans have been saying to each other in private for 40 years, and what they dog whistle in public with artful euphemisms that fool no one (except for everyone in the MSM who, it seems, are paid to be stupid).

I don’t think the writers at TPM actually know what a “dog whistle” is. Maybe they’re too young to have ever seen one.

In a tucked away ballroom, away from the fireworks and applause

That clause in the opening sentence says it all.

Nice try, Mr Madrid. Madrid as in Spain, as in being Hispanic. I’m surprised they let you in the building.

I don’t know how you say “fuck you” in way that it’s not perceived as fuck you. You can soften it and it’s still fuck you. The GOP has advanced itself by saying Fuck You. Blacks: Fuck you. Hispanics: Fuck you. It’s how they got where they are. All the folks that want to see the Blacks fucked vote GOP. Fuck you was what they wanted to say. How do you word smith fuck you?

“I am just going to say don’t say bad things. Don’t offend people.”

That’s the disconnect: they don’t recognize those things as or consider them to be “bad things” or “offensive”. To them, those things are good and virtuous, absolutely necessary to allay their fears and assuage their anger, and they are completely and utterly confounded by everyone else’s obstinate refusal to come around to their way of thinking about perceiving it all.

Well said. It’s the other candidates that are dog whistling. Unfortunately dog whistles are not good enough at the moment.

Hopefully.

Poor Mike doesn’t realize Gawd put him on Earth to make the browns understand a second class life under GOP leadership is the Creator’s divine plan :hankey:

“On the other, Drumpf was leading the nomination with a dog whistle message.”

Oh come on, there’s nothing dog-whistley about Trump’s message. The dog-whistling has been there for the past several decades, especially since 2008. It has just been dropping in acoustic frequency every year, to the point where not only can we all clearly hear it, it is a freaking Rolling Stones concert speaker that just blew a 50 amp fuse.

LOL, I just realized my copy/paste says “Drumpf” – a product of my Drumpfinator Chrome extension, courtesy of John Oliver. I don’t even notice it anymore, it seems completely natural!

How long is it going to take for Reps to realize that it isn’t how they are saying what they are saying, but it’s actually what they are saying that’s the problem? It’s not the spin, it’s the substance. Yeah, they do get rather crazy racist in their rhetoric, but the policy is racist, so the best you are going to be able to do with addressing the messaging is some concealment. They’re talking about how to apply the lip stick, and not the fact they are putting it on a pig.

And his advice to not say anything you wouldn’t say to your family doesn’t seem like any help at all. I can only imagine that kind of advice leading to worse statements, because I can’t imagine these people are suddenly less racist when talking to close confidants. I’d think they’d be even worse when they think they’re in a more private circle.

“I am not going to give you silver bullet words. I am just going to say don’t say bad things. Don’t offend people.”

I’ve heard “some people” call that being ‘politically correct’. And they hate that. Sorry, Mike.

“We make it so easy for them to make villains out of us,” Madrid said. “We just fall into the trap over and over and over.”

“For THEM to MAKE VILLIANS out of us.” Like the black hatted twirlly-mustachioed man complaining that somehow he gets made out to be a villain simply by tying the girl to the train tracks before the afternoon train. “It’s all optics, you see, that rat bastard in the white hat doesn’t realize the uppity little bitch had it coming for not accepting my amorous advances!”

“Don’t talk about building a wall and don’t talk about adding ten feet to the wall, don’t draw people out and create a fight with former heads of state.”

For his next windmill to tilt at, Mr. Don Quixote Madrid is going to suggest to Evangelical Christians that they’d be better off if they didn’t regard the Bible as the literal word of God.

Madrid said. “Look, we are asking to be irrelevant.”

your wish is granted.

“Don’t offend people,” huh? Hey, remember when Newt Gingrich — back in the freaking 1990s, folks — offered a list of words to describe Democrats, like “decay,” “traitors,” “radical,” “sick,” “destroy,” “pathetic,” “corrupt,” and “shame”? Boy, I just can’t imagine where Donald Drumpf got his tactics from.

Madrid has no idea how these fine folks talk to their own family

In the South it’s “Bless your heart!” But you probably already knew that living on the FL/GA border.

The ConPAC mindset: By all means, continue thinking all those bigoted, hateful ideas that you hold dear. It’s even okay to teach your kids to be bigoted racists too. Just as long as you stifle yourself when other people might overhear you.

At the dinner table in my liberal parents’ household, we were taught the opposite: the way that you talk about other people in private shows what’s in your own heart, good or bad.
