And please don’t give some fatuous bullshit about his being an ‘attorney first’. This man was hired to orchestrate the concealment of crimes by the president and his party because he’s gotten away with it before.

One thing to remember - Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein plans to leave the DOJ, and if Barr recuses himself then whomever trump nominates as Rosenstein’s replacement would then be overseeing the Mueller investigation.
If Barr isn’t a trump toady (as some reports have indicated) then his decision not to recuse himself might be the best choice for the investigation- with the added benefit of giving trump the impression that Barr is playing along.

He’s not going to block anything and he knows it. The truth will come out and, if Barr is seen as trying to prevent this, it will only tarnish his legacy while accomplishing nothing. You don’t have to look very hard to see that Trump is reckless, self-destructive and that he’ll eventually destroy himself and everyone around him in spite of anyone’s attempt to prevent this. Barr may be a lot of things, but he’s not an idiot and only an idiot would sacrifice everything they’ve worked for in such a futile attempt to protect Trump from himself.
Barr will probably just try to prevent the fallout of Trump’s antics from taking down the rest of the Republican Party but, if he’s not a complete fool, he already knows that Trump himself is a lost cause.

Why is Rosenstein leaving now specifically?
I sure hope you’re right. Though you have to wonder – he would have to at least pretend his willingness to do so for Donald to nominate him. Maybe he wanted the job badly enough to do that, or maybe he wanted it badly enough to actually fall on the sword.

And he’s probably smart enough to know we’re well past the point where trying to quash the investigation will help Trump or do anything other than get Trump impeached earlier and turn him (i.e. Barr) into greasy roadkill smear.

I saw something on MSNBC last night, very quickly, that said the Dems have checked their requests with Mueller, DOJ, SDNY, before sending their letters. Therefore, whatever the Dems are going after has already been cleared, more or less, for public release through Congress.

He’s trying to play 11-dimensional chess. Of course he’s compromised, that’s why he’s there. On the other hand, as people have noted, he’s probably less compromised than whoever else would be in charge once Rosenstein is gone. On the other other hand, he probably has significant personal exposure. If the House issues a referral for him, who makes the decision on it?
They wish to go back to a simpler time - back to the way things were structured in the beginning when the requirement to vote was that you be a Male - White - Land Owner - because clearly that is the only portion of the population that has the wisdom and insight to properly participate in critical decisions.

A reasonable guess, I believe, is that Barr’s job is to protect the GOP rather than Trump per se.
The public face of the Party may be slack-jawed lunacy allied to cynical opportunism — but surely the tactical bean-counters can count beans. The 2018 results look very nasty indeed. The choice of Barr as nettoyeur (h/t Jean Reno & Harvey Keitel) came, presumably, from within inner party circles.They know perfectly well that Trump is criminal to the bone, and sloppy, and slipping. It’s damage control time.
