Hard to explain how devastating it is. Like all color is removed from sight and the air itself is heavy. My heart goes out to his family. I just hope they don’t blame themselves.

It’s a chemical thing. In Robin William’s case, it was an actual brain disease. It may not have anything to do with external circumstances, although circumstances could trigger or exacerbate it.
I have two relatives who are bipolar. In their manic stages, they are exhilaratingly happy and want to engage everyone in their joy. In their depressed stages, both have considered suicide many times as the way out of their pain. If they didn’t have someone to hang onto at the very moment of their despair, it could have happened. Thankfully, both are currently healthy.

Yestetday evening there was a rememberance program on cnn. One of the reporters mentioned Bourfain …hung himself. To me thst is a violent act. So I differ with the local prosecutor
Well apparently Rev. Rob Lee didn’t care for Anthony Bourdain. Or the effect the comment might have on Tony’s family.
Unfortunately, yes. However, I don’t call it depression. I call it “The Sadness” because I think it better describes my “flavor” of this horrible malady.
It’s a terrible, terrible thing. Mostly because it’s not attributable to anything. It just is. I have been this way as long as I can remember. It’s always been there. It’s innate, intrinsic, like the color of my eyes.
I’m always distraught when people takes their life because I understand too well exactly how they felt. It’s a depth of hopelessness I wouldn’t wish on anyone. I feel even more deeply, however, for their friends and loved ones because it’s impossible for them to understand. It is impossible to understand.

It’s up about 25% since 1999, but the trend is long term and has less to do with Trump than with the Great Recession (especially the rise in foreclosures resulting from that recession) and with the opioid addiction crisis. A large number of people who commit suicide were people with no diagnosed mental health condition, but where a careful retrospective shows signs that they had a problem. That means that a lot of people are for whatever reason – lack of access to services, fear of stigma, inability to pay for care – people aren’t getting the help they need when they need it.
It occurs to me that the heavy load we have placed on people serving in the military, with repeated deployments in high-stress war zones, likely has a lot to do with the dramatic rise in suicide rates as well.
There’s a story in the June 7 issue of the Washington Post about the report that recently came out about the rise in suicide rates.

Deep depression is really not a matter of rationality. You cannot reason someone out of it. It is an overwhelming emotion that can all but paralyze someone. Some people (Winston Churchill, Abraham Lincoln) apparently learn to cope with it; medication can help, though sometimes it takes time and patience to find the right medication. Therapy can help, too.

Suicide by any means is a violent act. Hanging is more common than you might think; the WaPo article indicated that suffocation was second only to use of a gun in terms of methods of suicide. Both Kate Spade and Robin Williams hung themselves, as well.

Rev. Rob Lee was saying that in response to an asshole saying that Bourdain is in a special place in hell for dying of suicide. I doubt Bourdain’s family would be all that offended by the language; that man loved his cussing almost as much as good food.

An untold amount of suffering is going on across the country and around the world due not only to Trump and his maladministration but also to the program pursued on a daily basis by the GOP, which has become a truly sick entity in all regards: greedy, shortsighted, fact averse, mean spirited, generally immoral, and hateful toward both science and any form of genuine spirituality or enlightenment.

Gustavo Arellano was and perhaps may still be the author of the humorous column “Ask a Mexican.” Good stuff. Oftentimes hilarious good stuff.
He no longer writes it and the column no longer exists.
Gustavo was the publisher and editor of OC Weekly, which owns the rights to ¡Ask A Mexican! When the paper was sold in October 2017 the new owners directed him to fire half the staff. He refused and immediately resigned.
The new owners wouldn’t to let Arellano have the rights to ¡Ask A Mexican! even though he was the creator (writing the first one as a spoof in 2004) and only author of the popular syndicated column. ¡Pendejos!

I’m one of those people. I’ve been treated for depression for 55 of my 70 years. Before November 2016, I was only suicidal once. Every day since then has been a struggle and a victory. I have had days when I was immobilized by despair but I have survived. I sincerely believe that my commitment to The Resistance (I started wearing a homemade pin that says RESIST almost immediately, even before I knew that there was a movement) is the thing that has kept me alive. It isn’t Trump that has brought me so low. It is the fact that so many Americans support him and his policies of hate.
