Discussion: No Charges For Man Who Left Rifle At Utah Capitol

Discussion for article #243213

Surprised he wasn’t charged with carrying an unloaded weapon…

I find the man’s protest to be rather moving, poetic in a way. I’m glad he’s not being charged. I do hope he has been able to reach a few people’s minds and have them consider his message.

More likely dozens of concerned gun nuts will be offering to adopt the abandoned AK-47. Poor thing needs a home.

I like the mute poetry part of it too. I just disagree with the leaving boxes in state capitol buildings part. The easily foreseen ensuing uproar tends to muddle up your message IMHO. I think Mr. Crimefighter would have accomplished more by volunteering with a local Moms Demand Action group, handing out brochures at events and so forth, and introducing himself simply as “Cameron” while he was at it. I think the only way to have sensible gun control is to take a page from the NRA and organize interest groups committed to working on this over time. Poetic mute protests are nice but I think groups like MDA are the ones who’ll get it done if anybody can.

I have to agree with your points here. While I was writing my earlier post, I did consider the implications of just waltzing into a public place–public place of governance, nonetheless, but his point is better served in such a place–and laying down something that appears to be a coffin with a wreath on it (let alone just a lunch bag or backpack). Add to that, Utah being one of the deepest red states in the nation. Forty years ago, this wouldn’t have caused such a stir and uproar – and I totally understand the necessity in this day and age to take every relevant precaution with these types of unknowns, today’s world being as such.

I believe you are right about what we concerned citizens should be doing if we really are seeking to change minds and the direction of the current national conversation. I would welcome such a movement. I understand it would take awhile–many years–to build a groundswell, but it can be done. The sentiment really is there. I believe Michael Bloomberg has a lot of good ideas and infrastructure in his own campaign – though I don’t hear much about it anymore.

Publicity and promotion are things I’ve done for a living, but they aren’t exact sciences, certainly. Mute poetics are nice to assuage your own emotions, or for people to express their solidarity. Changing minds on an issue like this one, or rather changing the laws when the minds are pretty much in place, is a different sort of exercise. I like Moms Demand Action, but they don’t seem to have a presence locally around me. However there’s a coalition to prevent gun violence led by a high-school chum I see around, so I’ll ask him if I can help out.

You know, I believe I, too, will do a little research. I’m preparing for a surgery and the physical therapy afterwards, but after that I’d like to get involved in something positive and make an impact (however small or large). Hope your day is going nicely.
