I did once comment that Republicans might not fully understand some of the dangers facing the nation…was that bad?
Would that it were so. There are a hefty number (though currently a minority) of people who are so hate-filled and angry at an amorphous “other” that voting for people who want to drown Democrats, or castrate (some) in Congress like she learned to do to hogs, or get rid of the only health care security millions of people have ever had; is reason enough. The vileness of it is part of the appeal. Sad.
Sad too that Democrats didn’t muster the equivalent positive bluster: “You’re darn right I voted for the ACA, and this is why…” “What exactly about bringing our battle-weary troops home from Afghanistan (our largest, absurdly expensive and fruitless war) don’t you like?” “Here is a chart of what our economy looked like the day George Bush took over from Bill Clinton…here is a chart of the day President Obama took over from Bush…and here is a chart if it today…Do you have some facts to show what you are so mad about…or is it just this President’s success that riles you up?”
We have a big turnout in tiny Nelson, NH, in liberal Cheshire County. That is a good sign for the Democrats.
This is true. Just as 2014 was a bad map year for Dem Senate incumbents, 2016 will be worse for the GOP. Plus, a presidential election is a huge boost to Dem turnout. So 2016 will be a wave for the Dems.
Even this year, it is likely that Dems will win more governorships tonight. That, plus 2016 Dem wave, will lead to state governments leaning Dem, just in time for the 2020 census to re-align House districts and break the GOP gerrymander that has assured their undeserved advantage there.
All in all, this may be the last national election where the GOP wins. Ever.
If you start ostracizing states because of what some GOP leader in that state says, you will be down to a lonely number very soon.
This is too old for anyone to read, but just in case: Quite brilliant. You should have a column in the NYT or something. Please keep thinking and commenting. Try Washington Monthly, where the commenting system makes sense.
