Discussion for article #234998
They saved the worst part for last.
Gov. Chris Christie would have a range of options to fill the seat temporarily until a new election could be held. If that happens, Mr. Christie should find the speediest way possible to let voters choose a successor who, ideally, would come into office without questionable friends.
Yes. Since anyone Christie appoints would also have “questionable friends.”
actually, i’ve been surprised that this doc’s questionable medicare billing hasn’t been more prominent in this story… no way the millions this guy billed for his practices are legit. and it is floriduh… that elected one of the most successful medicare scam artists evah as governor – twice.
while I’m no fan of Menendez he needs to stay until the people of NJ throw him out, or the feds get a conviction because we all know what Crispie will appoint. If the NYT thinks there will be an expedited election I’d like to know what they’re smoking.
I guess the NYT forgot about innocent until proven guilty.
Yes and while what he did (from what I know) may be stupid and wrong, it doesn’t sound like corruption, I don’t remember the NYT calling for Senators Vitter and (the Veternarian guy who was fucking his friend’s wife) to step down.
The NYT other than it’s editorial page sucks.
Another blow for “innocent until proven guilty”
Our newspapers have become Judge, Jury and Executors, what do we need lawyers, courts and judges for? For that matter why bother with the constitution when the American people are just so many sheep that can be herded by the press, politicians and preachers?
Does this mean that NJ will have a Republican senator?
“He would be doing a disservice to New Jersey by clinging to power as a disgraced politician,” the editorial read.
As New Jersey’s poet laureate, Amiri Baraka, expounded, it’s “In the Tradition”!
“His colleagues in the Republican Governors Conference should demand that he step aside.”
Catch my drift?
Initially; Christie (sigh) would appoint a temporary replacement and schedule an election for a permanent one. And I don’t know how soon he’d be required to schedule that election. But in anticipation, I’m still pushing for Donna Edwards and Chris Van Hollen to flip a coin to decide who’ll move to NJ so we can have both of them in the Senate. (Sigh…)
It’s really so sad that the memory of, say, Bill Bradley and Frank Lautenberg is forgotten, obliterated by Harrison Williams, Bob Torricelli, Bob Menendez…
All Menendez has to say about stepping is the following:
I’ll be following Sen Vitter actions when he leaves!"
Not even the most terrible thing this SOB has done in recent years…remember him gathering support amongst Congressional radicals to add further sanction on Iran when he and they knew very well that would sabotage the negotiations taking place? To hell with Menendez.
This is what is available at http://www.ncsl.org/research/elections-and-campaigns/vacancies-in-the-united-states-senate.aspx
- If the vacancy occurs before a specified date preceding the regular primary (HI: 60 days; MN: 6 weeks; NJ: 30 days; NY: 59 days; VA: 12 days), the election is held in the following November; if the vacancy occurs within the specified period preceding the regular primary, the vacancy election is held at the second November election after the vacancy occurs.
So, a special election in either 2015 or 2016 in November is what I read, FYI Menendez’s term is up 2018.
