Discussion for article #224443

This Pope seems nearly human.

Good on him.

Bodies like the Catholic Church change very slowly - but the collection and consideration of data from “everyday Catholics” is a step in the right direction.

Four separate times now my hard-core, fish-on-Fridays, Latin-mass-going, rosary-praying relative has complained bitterly that Pope Francis “isn’t really Catholic.”

I cannot tell you how much that pleases me.

Though Francis’s mark is left here and there, let’s not get excited about this document.

Fr. Thomas Reese, National Catholic Reporter analyst leads his commentary:

A document “intended to provide an initial reference point” for the October Synod of Bishops on the family was released Thursday at the Vatican. The document acknowledges that “the primary task of the church is to proclaim the beauty of the vocation to love,” but there is little beautiful or inspiring in this document. If married life is as boring and joyless as this document, I am glad I am celibate.

Harrumph. If the Catholic Church is to maintain any relevance, it must admit that in an institution that encompasses so many gender discrepancies (masculine women and feminine men), not to mention the homosexuality that has pervaded the past two millennia since its origin and before, that intimacy and orgasm are not a sin and that money really is the root of all evil. They have been granting “indulgences” since the beginning; almost. Intimacy is love and it is a healthy part of the human experience. Stop demonizing the innocent.

it stresses that what is needed is better pastoral outreach

In other words, they don’t need to change their policies. They just need to change their PR. Where have I heard this before and how successful was it there?

“It distinguished between gays who are “discreet” in their lifestyle and
those who actively, “often aggressively” call attention to their unions.”

Yeah, you gays better be discreet while our priests are raping the kids!
