Discussion: Nets: Maine, Kentucky GOP Caucuses Still Too Early To Call

Discussion for article #246943

Oh, Lord! Here comes the brokered convention.

Republicans.
In the flesh.
It’s always a weird experience to set your eyes upon them.

Talked to a friend who went to caucus today here in KY. Didn’t sound much like a real caucus to me. Basically got a postcard to check off and put in a box, nothing like what Iowa does. News around here is, R’s are pissed off about all this and blaming Rand for the cluster-f. And KY Rep Party getting all kinds of flack for the change and not handling it well. Absentee ballots not sent out in time, caucus sites spread out and not enough locations and not enough info sent out by the party to inform voters and a host of other complaints. It will be interesting to see how much this hurts Rand in his re-election. Friend told me that there was a whole lot of complaining and blaming Rand for this mess.

Oh, did they just switch over to a caucus format? And was Rand behind the change?

(I know I could just google it, but sometimes conversation is more fun)

OH yea, he convinced the party to do it so he could run for Senate and President at the same time. Couldn’t do it because Ky constitution wouldn’t allow it so he convinced the R party to change to caucus to get around the law. He was to help pay for it by giving them $500,000 from his campaign money but he’s only ponied up $250,00 so far.

It was definitely because of Rand Paul. He isn’t still running, of course. They still have all the dropouts listed as choices. Sounds like they planned everything just as I suspected. They did very little planning.

Yep, friend said postcard ballot or whatever it is, had the names of several of the drop outs on it, and “bless her heart”, didn’t know why. I told her it probably had to do with printing the postcard thingys in time.

The race in KY could still “Go South” on Trump (and not in a good way). Very little has been reported from Western KY and they aren’t quite as likely to dismiss Cruz as a choice just because he is slightly less Caucasian than Trump. That matters in Eastern KY.

Names have to stay on a ballot even if they drop out, unless they drop out a set period of time before the cut-off deadline.

Agreed. But I do find the people of Eastern Ky to be far nicer people than in Western. Not that that means much politically just a comment from my years of experience traveling the state when I was in sales.

That’s crazy because I feel like caucuses (cauci?) have gotten a lot of press recently for their chaotic, undemocratic nature. If anything there should be movement away from a caucus format. I would be pissed if my state changed from a primary to a caucus. To be honest, I’d be less likely to participate unless I really felt strongly about the outcome.

They’re nice enough, to be sure. There’s a reason that a lot (most) of the eastern counties have a very low percentage of minorities. One town (probably many more) was a quintessential Sunset Town. A homemade sign stating “[Racial slur], don’t let the sun set on your black ass in [town name]” was posted at the city limits for a very long time. They have gotten a bit better, but those prejudices die hard. I have lived near these people my whole life…I’m familiar with them.
