Discussion: NCAA Lifts Penn State's Postseason Ban Imposed After Sandusky Scandal

Discussion for article #227399

Never should have punished the kids, and hats off to those who stuck with the program and to the fine recruiting classes in the wake of the sanctions.

because that’s what’s really important here. recruiting.

Bill O’Brien followed Joe Paterno as Penn State head coach.

In under a year he was fielding offers from two NFL teams, and 11 months after that - after being told to cool his heels in State College, PA for another season - he was hired to coach the Houston Texans.

The coaching staff has almost completely turned itself inside out since the crimes were revealed. However, it wasn’t “the kids” getting hurt. Why? Because the “kids” who were coming to Penn State for 10 and 11 win seasons in JoePa’s final years aren’t the same “kids” who were recruited to play for a heavily sanctioned Big Ten program.

Those “kids” would have gone to lesser programs, and will go to lesser programs in the future once these restrictions are relaxed.

The only people who stood to hurt for the next decade from these rulings were Penn State fans and alumni. If it were about kids, nothing would have changed. But a school with a huge alumni/booster base? They’ll get a reversal from the NCAA, no problem.

PSU would have been in a bowl each of the last 2 years based on their merit, the fact that the players, who had nothing to do with Sandusky or any of that, were denied an often life changing opportunity constitutes ‘getting hurt’. Those responsible are gone, in jail or dead.

It’s all about the Benjamins. Selling jerseys, tickets, filling hotels, making the money pig squeal.

The last two graduating classes of students on the team actually didn’t ‘make it’ the last two years. You best hope if a higher up in any institution you’re affiliated with does something horrific that they don’t take something of value that you worked for from you as punishment for the deeds of others. Not likely to happen but if it did you’d be the first to howl.

We get it, Chris. Only your opinion counts on this issue.
Snarky little douchebag.
