This is the “camels nose under the tent” to gin up “outrage, OUTRAGE I TELL YOU!” over a few miniscule miscounts that don’t affect the outcome at all, thus resulting in the flimsiest of excuses to throw the election to the State House, who will promptly re-elect McCrory.
Irregularlty (ir·reg·u·lar·i·ty) noun - An election in which the Republican candidate is not declared the winner.
Equal protection problem: why only Durham County? If one county’s votes can be skewed, any county’s can, so retally the entire vote.
Actually, what I heard for years about Illinois was that it was a contest to see if Republicans downstate could throw out more votes than Democrats in Chicago. That the Democrats would try to hold some of the Chicago votes until they had an idea of how many votes they’d need.
Remember JFK’s comment, in response to allegations that his father had bought votes in Chicago, that Joe Kennedy had sent him a note: “Dear Jack, Buy only as many votes as you need. I’m not paying for a landslide.”
The reason for four of the five cards being not readable was that the number of early votes on them was too large for the software to accept. Very old software. They brought in the voting machine manufacturer to verify the cards were not corrupt and that hand adding the numbers from the printed paper trail was accurate. The Durham board, which is majority Republican, also spot checked that too internally to be sure. All this was in testimony during the long state board meeting. Where the three Republicans asked almost no questions, and then just voted, even against the warning from their own counsel that their motion was without cause (!!!) to recount.
So part of the reason why McCrory is mad, is Durham turned out many voters not happy with him.
